What is Software Engineering?

I'm fairly new to the group and I haven't had a chance to meet any of
you to get a feel for what you are most passionate about. My hope is
that I can find a subset of Logan .Net developers who I can really
relate to. What I'm really looking for in the group is a way to make
myself a better software engineer. This raises the question "what is
software engineering"?

I believe that software engineering is not defined by technologies but
rather by practices. I also think that there is no real consensus on
which practices to adopt. Hopefully you will be willing to chime in
with your take on the subject.
