Dear Log Moocs

As spring unfolds, it’s a natural time to think about growth — both personal and professional. For decades, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has been a leader in online education, creating flexible pathways for working professionals to learn from world-renowned faculty wherever they are.

With upcoming application deadlines on the horizon, there’s never been a better time to explore programs that can help you deepen your expertise and take the next step in your career. Here are a few:

Master of Education in Education Policy, Organization and Leadership: Learning Design and Leadership concentration

The Learning Design and Leadership program prepares educators and learning professionals to create engaging, technology-rich learning experiences that inspire and motivate today’s learners. Through a blend of theory and hands-on practice, students explore the latest innovations in instructional design, educational technology, curriculum development and assessment.

Graduates earn an Ed.M. in Education Policy, Organization and Leadership and leave the program equipped to design impactful learning environments and lead innovation across schools, organizations and learning-focused industries.

This program is one of the College of Education’s top-ranked Online Master of Education and Graduate Certificate in Education programs. Apply by April 15 to start on May 18.

Master of Science in Environmental Geology

The M.S. in Environmental Geology program prepares professionals to tackle pressing environmental challenges through applied science and data-driven analysis. Designed for working professionals and remote learners, this flexible, fully online, non-thesis program focuses on the practical expertise needed for industry careers, including groundwater modeling, contaminant migration, environmental geochemistry and environmental geophysics.

Grounded in the department’s long-standing strengths in applied geology, the program also integrates geospatial and data science skills that are increasingly essential across environmental fields. Graduates are well-positioned for careers in environmental consulting, regulatory agencies, nonprofits and research organizations where advanced expertise is often key to professional advancement.

Not ready to start a master’s program? The 12-credit-hour graduate certificate program offers a flexible path to sharpen your expertise in applied geology. It also provides an ideal bridge to the online master’s program if you decide to continue your education.

Apply by April 15 (master’s program) or May 1 (certificate program) to start this summer.

Master’s in Journalism, Online Science & Technology Journalism Specialization

As scientific discoveries and technological breakthroughs reshape our world, the need for professionals who can clearly communicate complex ideas to the public has never been greater. This innovative program prepares communicators, journalists, scientists and industry professionals to translate cutting-edge research into compelling, accessible stories.

Through flexible online coursework, students build advanced skills in science reporting, multimedia storytelling and emerging media technologies while exploring topics such as genomics, health, environment and innovation. Along the way, they gain hands-on experience producing professional journalism and completing an in-depth master’s project while benefiting from the resources and research environment of a top-ranked university, including collaborations with the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology and the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology.

The deadline to apply for the fall semester is April 27.

Master of Science in Weather and Climate Risk and Data Analytics

As extreme weather and climate variability increasingly affect communities and industries worldwide, the demand for professionals who can analyze and interpret complex atmospheric data continues to grow. This program prepares students to turn weather and climate data into actionable insights, using tools such as Python, R and predictive modeling.

Offered fully online and designed to be completed in about two years, the program equips professionals to assess weather- and climate-related risk across sectors ranging from energy and agriculture to finance and insurance, making it especially valuable for careers in the rapidly expanding private sector of the atmospheric sciences.

If you’re not quite ready to begin a full master’s degree, the 12-credit-hour graduate certificate offers a convenient way to build specialized foundational knowledge in the weather and climate risk field. It also serves as a seamless stepping stone to the online master’s program, as the courses may be applied to the full graduate degree if you choose to continue.

Apply by May 1 (master’s program) or June 1 (certificate program) to secure your seat for the summer term.

Master of Veterinary Science Designed for veterinary, animal health and livestock professionals, the Master of Veterinary Science helps you deepen your expertise while advancing your career. This flexible, 32-credit-hour program — available online or on campus— focuses on practical, career-relevant learning that equips professionals to address complex animal health challenges using data, analysis and applied problem-solving.

Students can tailor their studies through two majors: Applied Veterinary Science, which builds broad expertise across animal health and diagnostics, and Livestock SystemsHealth, which focuses on population health and disease prevention in livestock systems. With personalized advising, flexible pacing and a hands-on capstone experience (no thesis required), the MVS is designed to fit the needs of working professionals while preparing them to lead in today’s evolving animal health fields.

Apply by May 1 to start this fall.

Certificate in Veterinary Science The Certificate in Veterinary Science is designed to help aspiring veterinarians strengthen their preparation for veterinary school. Developed by faculty in the College of Veterinary Medicine, the program offers exclusive graduate-level coursework that builds a strong foundation in animal structure and function, health and disease, and the scientific principles that guide veterinary medicine.

In addition to rigorous academics, students benefit from mentorship by veterinary faculty and current veterinary students, personalized career guidance and insight into the veterinary school application process. The program serves as a supportive bridge between undergraduate study and veterinary school while helping students develop critical thinking and scientific skills essential for success in the animal health field.

Apply by May 1 for the 12-week summer program, which runs May 19-Aug. 8. The early application deadline for the two-semester fall program is also May 1, and the final application deadline is June 15.
