Douglas Kearney, Coursera instructor for Sharpened Visions: A Poetry Workshop was named a 2026 Pulitzer Prize Finalist in Poetry for his collection I Imagine I Been Science Fiction Always (Wave Books).
The Pulitzer committee recognized the work as an AfroFuturistic visual poetry masterpiece, combining collage, music, typography, comics, and wordplay to push the boundaries of literary form. Kearney, an acclaimed poet, librettist, creative writing professor at the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities, uses this experimental work to explore themes of Black subjectivity, transhistoric emancipation, and performance poetics.
