Dear Log Moocs,

Good lessons rarely happen by accident. Thoughtful planning helps transform curriculum goals into meaningful learning experiences for students.

In Foundations of Teaching for Learning: Planning for Teaching and Learning, you explore how clear learning objectives, well-sequenced activities, and appropriate assessment support student progress. Planning is not about rigid scripts, but about making informed decisions that guide learning.

A central idea is that effective planning starts with the learner: considering what students already know, what they need to learn next, and how best to support them in getting there.

Try this in your planning:

  • Select one upcoming lesson and write the learning objective in student-friendly language.

  • Ask yourself how each activity helps students move towards that goal.

Continue your learning: Return to the Planning for Teaching and Learning course and continue with the next section. If you’ve completed it, explore another course in the Foundations of Teaching for Learning series to further develop your planning skills.

Warm regards,

The Commonwealth Education Trust
