Dear Log Moocs,
For a limited time, you can enroll in Columbia University’s newest online course, The Art of Opinion Writing, for free on Columbia+!
Course Overview: The Art of Opinion Writing
In today’s media landscape, anyone can share an opinion, but very few can write one that gets read, remembered, and taken seriously. The strongest opinion pieces do more than state a viewpoint. They advance public debate, introduce fresh insights, and present ideas in ways that resonate with both editors and readers. This course is designed to help you develop those skills.
What You’ll Learn:
Distinguish opinion writing from other forms of writing, such as academic writing and reporting
Construct a concise, persuasive argument in under 1,000 words
Analyze why successful opinion pieces resonate with editors and the public
Develop and deliver an effective pitch for an opinion piece
Format: Self-paced online, non-degree/non-credit course
Certificate: Learners can earn a certificate upon completing all course requirements
Instructor:
Jelani Cobb, Dean, Graduate School of Journalism and Professor of Journalism
Staff Writer, The New Yorker
Jelani Cobb is an award-winning journalist and one of today’s leading voices in public discourse. He received a Peabody Award for his PBS Frontline film Whose Vote Counts? and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Commentary. His work explores politics, history, race, and culture.
