Hi all,

We are currently developing a thesaurus covering Egyptian necropolises of the Middle Kingdom. It should also include the transliterations from the hieroglyphic texts. Do you know of any RDF ontology that contains such a property so we could reuse it? Furthermore, I would like to impose a north-to-south order on the necropolises. Is there something like a isSouthOf/isNorthOf property I could use for that purpose or should I include the complete geo-coordinates for this purpose?

thanks!
Christian

Christian,

I have limited support for this in the Graves [1] ontology through the use of the "epitaph" property, you can have both original and transliterated elements using strings with the iso-15924 language codes (Egyp, 050).

I have not found anything that records orientation of the elements of a monument; using dc:partOf along with the coordinates of the different elements might be a short term solution. I do not believe that the wikipedia monuments project has anything like this at this time.

Please let us know if you find anything else?

best,

The Graves ontology looks great!

Christian, a few years ago I worked with a group at KCL on a very
basic (much simpler than CIDOC CRM) vocabulary for expressing the
findspots and attestations of inscriptions at Aphrodisias
(http://insaph.kcl.ac.uk/iaph2007/index.html). It is described at

http://gawd.atlantides.org/terms/

The idea is that you relate an inscription to a place identified by a
URI. A place from Pleiades, Geonames, OpenStreetMap, Wikipedia, or
wherever.

The IAph project doesn't have a transcription property because the
transcription is understood to be the alternate Epidoc XML
representation of the inscription resource
(http://insaph.kcl.ac.uk/iaph2007/xml/iAph040202.xml from
http://insaph.kcl.ac.uk/iaph2007/iAph040202.html, for example).

What would you guys think of a set of properties such as

<Thing> <xxx:northFaceOf> <Thing>
<Thing> <xxx:northOf> <Thing>

Is there any reason that you would prefer this north of south of info
to just giving decimal value lat longs? If you have lat/longs they are
just so much more expressive and reusable.

There are a few  issues at play here: some examples are

1:
If X is the north face of something Y
      X, the face, is approximately a Plane;
Y is a three-dimensional object that is not a sphere.
If Y is translated to a different location, then the coordinates of the points lying on X will likewise be changed.

2:
To say that a point X is north of a point Y broadly describes  their relative location but does not require that the precise coordinates of X or Y be known; nor is it necessary to know the precise distance.

There are  also different possible interpretations of north Of.

The second interpretation is considerably less precise, but is the probably the more common intention:

"Captain Smith, you will lead  your company  through the phase line running between those  two hills to the north."
"But Major,  those hills aren't directly north of us."
" I stand corrected.  Captain Smith, you will advance through the phase line running between those two hills to the north. "

Simon

[I'm ignoring the problems that occur around the north or south pole. Too many shoggoths].

This would be for monuments that have multiple faces - lat / long are not going to be practical at this resolution and any map rendering software will have trouble representing this is in sane manner.

Good morning,
I'd like present to you a new GLAM project based on linked data. ReLoad is an experimental project of Archivio Centrale dello StatoIstituto per i Beni archivistici of Emilia-Romagna region and regesta.exe and it aims to test tecnologies and metodologies of semantic web and linked data in archives. We have released as beta version a first ontology for archival description (OAD) and we have converted ISAD standard in skos format.
In ReLoad project we have "unlocked" data of 4 finding aids of IBC and 1 of Archivio Centrale dello Stato using OAD ontology, EAC-CPF ontology and other well known ontologies.
All reference documents and ontologies published are available herehttp://labs.regesta.com/reload/ (unfortunately the website is only in italian language, we hope in a few weeks to publish an english version too).
