On 25 January 2023, Maria Caulfield, health minister and minister for women, confirmed to the House of Commons that the HRT prepayment certificate would be available from April 2023, meaning that women in England will only need to pay 18.70 per year for all their HRT prescriptions.

It has now been confirmed that the HRT prepayment certificate will cover all HRT items licensed to treat the menopause in England, a list of which will be published in the online Drug Tariff and as part of the application process for the certificate.

As the HRT prepayment certificate only covers HRT medication, GPs are being asked to put HRT medications on separate prescription forms to any other medications you may be taking. Please request your medication in the usual way and our prescription clerk team, will put HRT requests through on a separate script.

Today the Government announced that from April 1 patients in England will be able to buy an 18.70 annual prepayment certificate for HRT, reducing the cost and increasing access to a range of medicines to treat the menopause.

The prepayment certificate is great news for women in England who need HRT to manage symptoms of the menopause as it makes vital medicines more affordable. However, it remains inequitable that people with other long term conditions still have to pay the prescription charge which is in effect an unfair tax on health.

If you need more than three prescribed items in three months or more than 12 items per year, which is very likely with birdshot, prepayment certificates will save you money. You can use the prepayment certificate for all your NHS prescriptions, whether from a hospital or from your GP.

At present, prescriptions in England are charged at 9.65 per item. If you need more than three items in three months, or more than 11 in 11 months, a prescription prepayment certificate (PPC) is by far the most cost-effective option.

Be aware that the new HRT prepayment certificate may not be the best value option available for you. If you take medications for any other conditions, a different type of prepayment certificate (discussed below) might work out cheaper.

The new HRT prepayment certificate (PPC) being rolled out today (1 April) will reduce prescription costs to just 19.30 per year and can be used against a list of eligible HRT items which includes patches, tablets and topical preparations. Patients can use the HRT PPC as many times as they need across the year.

People receiving Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) for the menopause can pay 19.30 for a certificate to cover the cost of certain HRT medicines. Yet men only have the option of a 111.60 certificate to cover male HRT treatment. We want the HRT certificate to be extended to cover male HRT treatment.

The government has rejected five proposals in the Menopause and the Workplace Report by the Women and Equalities Committee but has said that the HRT prepayment certificate will be introduced from April 2023, subject to the necessary consultation with professional bodies.

To assist with the expense of medications, the Department of Health and Social Care introduced the NHS prepayment certificate. A PPC can be a less expensive option for those who are not eligible for free prescription drugs in England. Purchasing it in lieu of buying each prescription item separately can save you money.

Prescription drugs for the NHS, including dental medications, are covered by an NHS prescription prepayment certificate (PPC). Purchasing a 3 month or 12 month PPC will cover all NHS prescription expenses during that time, saving you money over paying for each prescription and item you get.

Every NHS prescription is covered by the certificate for a predetermined amount. If you require more things than three in a three-month period or eleven in a twelve-month period, you will save money. In order to be eligible for free NHS prescriptions, you must ensure that your certificate is genuine. You may be subject to a 100 penalty if you file a claim after your certificate has expired.

Due to its speed and environmental friendliness, you will receive your certificate details by email as soon as you purchase your PPC. Make careful to time your purchase appropriately, since your PPC will become active on the day of purchase!

Your certificate will automatically renew in the last month if you have a PPC and are paying by DD. Email or letter will be used to notify you. On the day following the expiration of your existing PPC, your automatically renewed PPC will begin. The day your new PPC begins, digital certificates will be emailed to you.

To find out whether your certificate is still valid and when it expires, you should use the NHS website. A new certificate should be purchased online, over the phone, or at designated pharmacies in order to reapply or renew your current one.

You can purchase a PPC in a few different methods. Online, the NHS offers PPCs for purchase. You have the choice to print your certificate yourself or have it emailed to your email address. Unless you designate a different date, the PPC for an online purchase will begin on the day you submit the application.

The NHS medicine prepayment card is no longer available for purchase. The plastic NHS prepayment card has been phased out because it is costly for the NHS and the environment, and it can take a while to arrive.
