March heralds the official start of spring and we have a great series of Garden programs for you to enjoy! You don't want to miss our Pop-Up Houseplant Sale, the one time each year that we bring out all of our hidden Plant Nursery gems for indoor environments, including rare specimen plants. Members receive early access on Thursday, March 5th. Plantsman extraordinaire Dan Hinkley will be visiting from Washington state, sharing his plant collecting adventures, and suggesting stellar subjects for our Bay Area gardens. This month, you can take a virtual expedition to Namaqualand South Africa, graft an heirloom apple tree, weave a spring basket, bring children for natural dyeing—and of course we hope you will see all that is blooming in the Garden!

For discounts on programs, and plant purchases, consider becoming a Member!

Zoom Botany Talk: Botanical Explorations in Namaqualand

Wed, March 11, 12:00–1:00 pm
Free, donations welcome

Take a virtual plant expedition to South Africa! Join Horticulturist Ethan Fenner and Director of Collections Andrew Doran as they share photos from their recent 10-day expedition into Namaqualand, the arid region of South Africa's North West coast. This area is known among botanists for its immense plant diversity, including otherworldly forms of succulents, intricate and ephemeral bulbs, and dazzling displays of annual flowers. Many of the species they highlight are exceedingly rare, highly endangered, and at risk of being poached out of their native habitat. Learn more about these plants, and the Garden's role in conservation at this online talk; then come see the "superbloom" begin on the Garden's Southern Africa hillside.
