Berkeley Ready News & Updates

Hi Berkeley Ready Community. Did you feel the earthquake this month? Was it a little scary? Perhaps we're all feeling a little scared and uncertain right now. This month, we're offering two in person trainings focused on mental health and using improvisation to adapt and adjust in real time. We're also delighted to partner with Berkeley Humane and Berkeley Animal Care Services on a Pet Preparedness Webinar.

If you can't make it to an in person event, that's okay. You can also prepare for earthquakes and participate in Great Shake Out wherever you are on October 16 at 10:16 am -- drop, cover, and hold on!

We'll be on campus on October 16 at the UC Berkeley Great Shake Out and Preparedness Block party from 10 am to 2 pm. It's open to the community in Dwinelle Plaza, and we hope to see you there!

When the Unexpected Happens: Protecting Our Pets and Our Neighbors

We're delighted to share that Berkeley Ready, Berkeley Humane, and Berkeley Animal Care Services have joined forces to provide practical tools and training for pet families.

On Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at 6:30 PM, we will co-host a free online webinar on zoom to help residents build a disaster preparedness plan that includes every member of the household—four-legged ones included.

This program is free and open to all Bay Area residents, but space is limited. Please register in advance to secure your spot.

Preparedness tip of the month

Earthquakes can strike without warning. The safest response is simple but lifesaving: Drop to your hands and knees, Cover your head and neck under a sturdy table or desk (or with your arms if no shelter is nearby), and Hold On until the shaking stops.

Another way to ensure the safety of your household BEFORE an earthquake is to secure heavy furniture, bookshelves, appliances, and electronics. most injuries and deaths from earthquakes in the United States happen from falling objects or large furniture.

Put time on your calendar now to walk through your home and identify quick changes you can make!
