Parks, Recreation & Waterfront Capital Projects Update

City of Berkeley

PRW Capital Projects Team

The City of Berkeley manages Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) across the city to modernize aging facilities, improve accessibility, meet current safety standards, and support evolving community needs. Investments in park and facility improvements help strengthen recreational programming, protect neighborhood vitality, and build our shared social infrastructure.

The Department of Parks, Recreation & Waterfront (PRW) leads its own Capital Improvement Division, made up of three working groups overseeing projects throughout Berkeley and at the City’s residential camps in Tuolumne, Sonoma, and El Dorado counties. PRW projects support parks, recreation centers, pools, sports fields, public restrooms, open spaces, camps, and the Berkeley Marina and Waterfront.

Willard Clubhouse Public Art Unveiling and LEED Gold Celebrations

Please join us February 11, 2026, at 11 am for the unveiling of the newly commissioned artwork at the Willard ClubhouseEnchanted Forest, by artist Julie W. Chang, draws inspiration from Berkeley’s flora and fauna and the history of Willard Park as a beloved gathering space.

The unveiling is paired with an exciting milestone for the building that houses it, making this a celebration of both art and environmental stewardship. As the City of Berkeley’s first all-electric municipal building, the Willard Clubhouse exceeded its design goal of LEED Silver and achieved LEED Gold certification for its energy efficiency, reduced environmental impact, and commitment to occupant health and comfort.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

African American Holistic Resource Center Groundbreaking Ceremony

African American Holistic Resources conceptual design - three story building
African American Holistic Resource Center Rendering

The African American Holistic Resource Center (AAHRC) will be a new community services building that will replace the existing 3,910 square foot single-story City-owned commercial building with a new 2-story community building. The new building has a proposed footprint of 3,170 square feet, and a gross floor area of approximately 6,000 square feet.

The AAHRC will be open to all and prioritize services that focus on serving African American Berkeley residents, particularly people from South and West Berkeley neighborhoods, and those displaced from Berkeley who have been disproportionally impacted by racism, gentrification, and those that will benefit from treatment and services provided in a culturally responsive and supportive way.

Last Friday, January 23rd, we had a groundbreaking to celebrate and prepare for the construction of the African American Holistic Resource Center.
