THE MAYOR’S MONTHLY

April 2026

WELCOME!

It has been a busy spring!

My office hosted a community art reception at the Berkeley Art Center to view the artworks that have been selected for display in my office. It was wonderful to meet many of the artists in person and to celebrate our talented artists.

Even the pouring rain and wind didn’t stop over 350 volunteers from joining a wildfire vegetation cleanup hosted by BerkeleyCorps, Berkeley Firewise, and HelpBerkeley. We cleaned up over 10,000 pounds of vegetationand debris! Read more about it.

Visit Berkeley is currently working on a citywide effort to identify and promote venues that will be showing World Cup games during June and July.  If your business is interested in hosting viewings, fill out this questionnaire.

I recently put out a statement regarding the 2027 – 2028 Berkeley City Budget. Public input will be critical throughout the process; I encourage you to participate in upcoming City Council meetings.

In community,
Adena Ishii

On Monday, May 11, Mayor Ishii will be hosting the 30th Annual Berkeley Mayor's Student Awards.

The Mayor’s Awards were created to honor Berkeley High School, Berkeley Technology Academy, and Independent Study students who have demonstrated exceptional achievement in the following categories: Citizenship, Communication, Community Service, Extraordinary Effort, Leadership, Performance/Visual Arts, and Sports/Athleticism.

The event will take place on the UC Berkeley campus and will include student performances, speakers, and remarks by Mayor Ishii. We expect to present awards to over 150 students.

Although this event is not open to the general public, if you would like to view the festivities and celebrate these amazing students, the program will air live on YouTube and on cable TV Channel 33 via Berkeley Community Media at 6 pm.

From cafes to manufacturers, Berkeley has no shortage of creative and innovative small businesses that add to the vibrancy of our city.

Continuing to shine a spotlight on some of those businesses, this month it's District 6:
El Talpense Mexican Restaurant
El Talpense Mexican Restaurant believes in using the freshest ingredients available and taking the time to prepare each dish with care and attention to detail. In addition, they value authenticity and tradition, taking pride in honoring the rich culinary heritage of Mexico by using traditional recipes and cooking techniques that have been passed down through generations.

At the same time, El Talpense believes in innovation and creativity, and is always looking for new and exciting ways to push the boundaries of Mexican cuisine and elevate the dining experience for their customers. They prioritize a welcoming, friendly atmosphere, where everyone feels like they're part of the family.

Berkeley is fortunate to home to a diverse and significant number of nonprofit organizations that provide vital support and services to the community and raise awareness about important issues.

This month, we’re spotlighting an organization in District 6:
Friends of the Fountain and Walk
Friends of the Fountain and Walk is an all-volunteer, state and federally recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit group that led the effort more than a quarter-century ago to restore The Circle Fountain (Grizzly Fountain) and Walk to their original glory.

That project constituted the largest privately-funded public works project ever undertaken in the City of Berkeley. Today, they continue as stewards of these civic treasures: raising funds, volunteering, and working hand in hand with the city to maintain and improve them.

Community Stewardship Grant

Student groups, service clubs, community organizations, and others can lead projects that protect local creeks and the Bay and apply for grants of $500 to $6,000.

Previous grant awardees have used the funds to start coastal and creek cleanups; public education and art projects; and creekside restoration projects.

The Community Stewardship Grant is distributed by the Alameda County’s Clean Water Program. For-profits and public agencies are not eligible to apply.

Awardees will be announced in late July. Apply by 5:00 PM on Monday, May 4, 2026.
