Dear Berkeley City Council,
I'm a daily bicyclist (and occasional motorist). I feel distinctly LESS safe when riding in cycle tracks, especially narrow ones that have long stretches of curbs on both sides. Being forced to ride so close to curbs is deadly dangerous for bicyclists. That's true especially for beginners and youngsters. Add the fact that many bicyclists, e-bikers, powered skateboards and scooters are blatant law-breakers, routinely running stop signs and stoplights. I feel at least as threatened by speeding bikes and e-powered vehicles in cycle tracks as I do by cars in share-the-road places. Making it illegal to have e-vehicles in cycle tracks won't work to improve safety, given the number of routine law-breakers. A normal bike lane makes it easy for fast-moving bikes to pass, simply by temporarily moving into a normal car lane. Places where Hopkins is too narrow for bike lanes, then share-the-road is the best and easiest solution. So please: no cycle tracks on Hopkins; I support Shoshana O'Keefe's position.
