Our March concert features two wildly different American composers, Samual Barber and Leonard Bernstein.
We begin with Barber’s Violin Concerto, one of the world’s great and beloved violin concertos, played by Kate Vo, co-winner of our concerto competition. It’s often called “the great American violin concerto.” The first two movements are lyrical, lush, sumptuous. Then the third movement goes totally bonkers! Let’s put it this way. The violinist who was supposed to play its premiere, didn’t—because it was too hard for him. But not for Kate Vo! Come, be mesmerized, be astonished!
Next up is Bernstein’s Overture to Candide, which he wrote at the same time as West Side Story. It’s become one of America’s orchestral favorites—a fun, exuberant toe tapper that’s sure to help you digest the beverage and treats you had at intermission.
Dance to a waltz in 7/8 time? We dare you! The Boston Symphony commissioned Leonard Bernstein to write a piece commemorating its 100th Anniversary in 1980. Bernstein delivered the Divertimento for Orchestra, eight jazzy, jaunty music bagatelles (including that un-gaitly waltz) that will have you oohing, laughing, aahing and, probably, limping. Please be careful as you exit the hall.

Rewards are Here!
We appreciate all donations from our wonderful audience members; we couldn’t provide music without you. Look for the Donor Rewards table in the lobby. If you’ve not collected your envelope, we’ll be handing out rewards—for donations made during our 2024-2025 season—before the concert and during intermission.
We do keep track of your donations so we can reward you. If you donate when you reserve tickets or use our online donation link, it’s in our system. If you donate using a check, we’ll track that for you. If you’d rather donate cash while you’re at a concert, just put it in the envelope that’s in a program, note your name/email and we’ll keep track of that too! We’ve enhanced the rewards and added a new category: The Prometheus Legacy Society. You can check out the new rewards and make a donation here.
