Dear Berkeley Neighbors,
The Berkeley City Council continues to shut out the residents of Berkeley.
City Council members have consistently ignored the voice of Berkeley residents in deference to powerful, well-resourced special interests like developers and foreign lobby groups.
How much more can we tolerate?
Hundreds of Berkeley residents show up, stand up, and speak up at city council meetings... and still the Council votes against the will and best interests of its constituents. Whether it's the unpopular upzoning ordinance they're trying to ram through without community input, or other major decisions, the pattern is the same — special interests win; tenants, home owners, and small businesses get ignored.
Next year, there will be city council elections in districts 1, 4, 7 and 8.
It is time to take back our city council and reinvigorate Berkeley's identity as a beacon for human rights and a champion of the working class and underserved. With so many entrenched interests arrayed against us, the only way forward is solidarity.
Our community groups need to come together to begin to strategize.
We need to organize and strategize to find competent and aligned candidates, and then provide the support they need to win. We invite you to send representatives to a community gathering so we can begin this important process. We hope you can join us.
