This is an AC Alert from the City of Berkeley. The National Weather Service has declared an Excessive Heat Warning including Berkeley from 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 2 to 8:00 p.m., Saturday, July 6. Temperatures are expected to reach the 90s on Tuesday and Wednesday and mid 80s the rest of the week.Take steps today to make sure your household, neighbors, and loved ones stay safe and comfortable tomorrow.
- Prepare to stay cool in your home: Gather supplies to stay cool, like fans and ice. Watch this video about how to keep your house cool in the summer without air conditioning.
- Keep your body cool: In hot temperatures, sweating cools your body down. In this process, you lose water, so plan to stay hydrated by preparing ice and cold water to drink.
- Plan where to go if your home gets too hot: City libraries and senior centers will be open during normal operating hours (closed Thursday, July 4) if you need a safe, cool place to escape the heat. These sites have air conditioning:
- Central Library, 2090 Kittredge
- Claremont Branch Library, 2940 Benvenue
- Tarea Hall Pittman South Branch Library, 1901 Russell
- North Berkeley Senior Center, 1901 Hearst (closed Tuesdays)
- South Berkeley Senior Center, 2939 Ellis (closed Fridays)
- Buddy up with your friends, family, and neighbors: Make a plan to check on the vulnerable people in your network at least twice daily through Saturday. Elders, children, people with certain medical conditions, and people who live alone can be very vulnerable to heat.
For more information on steps you can take, review the attached printable flyers.
Red Flag Weather not expected in Berkeley Hills
Additionally, the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag warning for the East Bay Hills from 11 p.m., Monday, July 1 to 11 p.m., Tuesday, July 2. The Berkeley Fire Department requested a forecast specifically for conditions in the Berkeley hills. This National Weather Service “spot” forecast does not predict Red Flag Warning conditions for the Berkeley hills. We will continue to monitor this weather event for any changes. Until then, it is always a good idea to be ready for wildfire evacuation and to check PG&E for any power outages in your area.
