September 12, 2026 Late summer is here in Berkeley, and it is a beautiful time of year to get out in the neighborhood to enjoy the seasonal restaurant items, shopping, and fun events happening in the district. Find out about how to participate in their photo contest!  Thank You for Supporting the Emergency Relief Fundraiser & Candlelight Vigil for Nepal In light of the recent flood disaster in Nepal, the community came together on August 30th to raise funds for disaster relief and hold a candlelight vigil for the victims of the flood.  Ram, the organizer and owner of Taste of the Himalayas, said, "I truly don't have enough words to express my deepest gratitude to you and our entire North Berkeley family for the incredible support and love shown to Nepal during these difficult times." The City of Berkeley recently passed legislation promoting fire safety which requires 1,200 home owners to clear flammable materials within five-feet of their homes. While these changes are necessary for safety, they also expand opportunities for art in the landscape.  The Zone 0 exhibition aims to unite artists and gardeners to bring creativity and imagination to home gardens — without compromising fire resilience. New Business Spotlight: Looking Glass Photographic Outfitters 2095 Rose St Looking Glass is an independent photography store and community resource. We help people choose cameras and lenses, find the right film, rent equipment, process and scan their photographs, learn new skills, and become more confident photographers. This is a neighborhood that truly feels like home. Looking Glass has been a Berkeley institution since 1971, the same year Chez Panisse opened its doors and the Cheese Board became a worker-owned collective. We have evolved with the times and survived as the last remaining dedicated camera store in the immediate East Bay area. We are deeply connected to our community and use that knowledge and experience to define our operations and meet its diverse needs. Many of our customers were delighted to find out that we are now much closer to them and that they can walk to our store. On Rose: Photo Contest One of our biggest new community projects is On Rose, a juried photography contest inspired by our move to Rose Street and the idea of la vie en rose: hope, renewal, resilience, transformation, and seeing the world through a different lens. Participants may submit up to three photographs interpreting the theme through their own experiences and creative vision. The contest is being judged by three talented Bay Area photographers and educators, each with a distinctive photographic voice. We designed On Rose to be approachable as well as meaningful. It is open to photographers at different experience levels, and entry is available on a sliding contribution scale. Look forward to a morning stroll through the district on the fourth Thursday of the first month of each quarter. The quarterly walks will feature a special guest who will share insights, lead tours, and facilitate conversations about North Shattuck happenings. These walks are welcome to everyone! Come out for a refreshing morning walk where you can get to know your neighbors, enjoy some coffee and a morning treat, and learn more about the happenings in the neighborhood. North Berkeley Outdoor Gallery Project The North Berkeley Outdoor Gallery Project is an initiative to showcase local creativity while bringing vibrancy and community spirit to the commercial district of North Shattuck. This outdoor gallery features thirty banners designed by thirteen East Bay-based artists.  The banners are newly displayed throughout North Berkeley, highlighting the incredible talent of the local artists and celebrating the cultural identity of the neighborhood. This project has been in the works for the last two years, and the North Shattuck Association and all the artists are thrilled that it has finally come to life, displayed for everyone to admire and enjoy. Designed for both beauty and reliability, the energy-efficient LED lighting shines consistently year-round, while smart timers and built-in battery backup ensure seamless operation with minimal maintenance.
