Having jet lag will make you feel tired and run down and therefore you
will not be yourself. This could possibly ruin a vacation or mess up a
business meeting. On the other hand, when you have a short flight or
trip, you can normally avoid getting jet lag because you’re basically
sticking to your daily schedule.
The most important thing to do when you travel is to try and keep
everything similar as if you were home. This involves your eating,
exercising, sleeping, and daily routines. If you do this your body has
a less chance of getting jet lag because you will not be forcing it to
make a quick adjustment.
1. Once you arrive at your destination try to get a quick workout or
exercise. You can either hit the gym in the hotel your staying at,
walk around the town, walk a mall, or do something to increase your
energy and adrenaline. Your body will store extra energy for later if
you follow this simple effective rule.
2. Liquids are very important for your body when you travel. If you do
not hydrate your body correctly than chances are you will become jet
lag. Try to drink plenty of water, fluids, or electrolytes when you’re
departing for your trip and while you’re flying to your destination.
Juices can be good at times as well. On the other hand alcohol can
totally dehydrate your body so use caution if you like to drink prior
or when flying because jet lag can be made worse by becoming
dehydrated on your trip or while you’re headed there on the plane. If
you have to drink for some odd reason then try drinking a glass or two
of water with every drink you consume. This will help aid your body
from dehydrating.
3. Having problems sleeping? If you can't fall asleep after a long
travel flight you can seek to take a safe, over the counter, sleeping
pill to attempt to try and get your body to adapt to the new change
(time zone). We would never recommend this but when all else fails and
you’re on a long trip you will need to do something in order to get
some sleep so you can stay alert for the rest of your trip. Please
make sure to consult your doctor or pharmacy before taking any
medications. For those of you like us, you can try using natural
sleeping aids like sleepy tea or aromatherapy.
4. Sleeping is super important. While roaming out of your normal time
zone you should aim to keep to normal bedtimes as much as possible. It
is normal for your body to reject this however you should try to give
your body the same hours of sleep it normally gets per night. If you
can't get your body to crash (fall asleep), just jump into bed and lay
there with your eyes shut as chances are you will end up going to bed
sooner or later. If you can do this, chances are your body will adapt
faster and you can get into a fresh mode for the time your away from
home.
5. Get into the beat of things. Make sure to acclimate yourself to the
new time zone by adjusting to the new time zone time. Try to get into
the beat of things by eating when others are eating (their time zone)
and sleeping when it's time to sleep. Try to adjust to the light and
dark of the new destination and time zone. Do not let your body fall
into a predicament where you are staying up till the morning hours and
going to sleep when you should be eating dinner later that night. This
is the typical mistake that can cause you to get jet lag.
Follow these easy steps above to help yourself adjust to your travel,
time zone change, and jet lag!
