Having just purchased a Philips DVD player - where's a good place in Perth
to hire out the disks?

I believe there is some place called 'DVD Hire' in Mirrabooka - anything
else?

(Or is it worth setting up a DVD swap club in perth?)

For those who haven't seen DVD, imagine the _best_ video quality you have
ever seen, SVHS and all .... DVD is better than that. It's better than
broadcast films and certainly equal to live news casts from the local
stations. Foxtel Satelite comes close.

Only pisser - most disks we have seen so far put out an NTSC signal, so you
will need a multiformat televison to see them.

dig.

Umm, the only good place is either Surround Sounds in Claremont or in
Cannington. We also get most of ours from http://www.dvdexpress.com there fairly
good and reliable.
Only takes a week for the movies to be sent over, just be aware that you will
need to get
a maximum of 3 sent over. If you get more sent over you get hit with some
taxes.

I heard about that, but is it open?

But then think of 5.1 channels of sound. Digital sound in your own home, just
as good as most of thecinemas in Perth.

And you need the reciever to play in AC3 format. But DVD rocks hard.Digger if
youd like to do a few swaps for a couple of days, give me an email and let me
know

The Hire place in Mirrabooka is (in my opinion) pretty crap... I went
there to have a look and I wasnt really impressed... But then again a
friend of mine goes there all the time..

That sounds like a really good idea... Just need to get lots of people
interested.

Yeah I have to agree with that... the quality is awesome.. If I can rent
a move on DVD instead of VHS I sually do...

Wouldn't you have worn that particular DVD title out at some point during
the first viewing? ;-)

Ah hell no, Armageedon is a good, fun action movie, don't expect gobs of
scintillating dialogoue or well rounded acting, but the effects are brilliant, the
sound is brilliant and I just think it is a cool DVD 'demo' :-)

Hi Digger,

Well my local (Kwinana) Video Ezy has a pretty good selection of DVD's
for hire. I know of a few VE's that don't have them, worth while
asking as they may decide to get them in, if enough people ask.

Regards

Stephen

It's a pretty poor DVD though - not 16:9 Enhanced so the quality is not
the best that DVD can provide, all because the studios like re-releasing
everything to make more money.

I don't purchase local Region4 DVDs - so far they've all been rubbish,
don't include the fantastic extra features that the Region1 DVDs do and
sometimes are a completely different transfer to the rest of the world
(i.e. crap video quality).

Niall.

Went there yesterday - and yes, crap is a good word to use.

Yeah, its the same old problem - people aren't going to buy the players
until there is a lot of software available - but the hire places aren't
going to make it available unless there is demand from the many people with
the players.

All Region 1 disks are NTSC, not so sure about region 4 (.au). On a good
multi format tv (we have a 63cm Mistubishi), you can't really see it.

Spoke to the closest Video Ezy (Tuart Hill), they have about 50 odd titles,
Region 4 only.. Local Blockbuster don't want to do them _yet_, but they
mentioned that one of the stores is trialing them.
