I want to get both of these drives but I won't until I'm sure they will work
with Linux. I have the RH6.0 box set.
Anyone had any problemos? What software is there for Linux?

cheers
Neil

CDR's are fine.. xCDRoast is excellent as a burning program.
DVD-Roms are no problem either, just use the standard ATAPI driver.

I've put a symbolic link in on mine from /dev/hdc to /dev/dvdrom and
/dev/hdd to /dev/cdrom, and put entries in autofs to automount
them, and it works *very* nicely thankyou very much.

The only problem with DVDRoms is that software for DVD-Video
playback is very thin on the ground under linux at the moment.
Some people are working quite hard on that problem though, give
DVD-Video is well, just so damn sexy :)

Cheers

M

Cool. Thanx Mark.

As you say, I'm sure that will cease to be a problem Real Soon Now.

Like Linux itself!

On another related front, to do with DVD-ROMs but not necessarily Linux:

Can you use a DVD drive to digitally extract (rip) CDA tracks from an audio
CD to hard disk -> MP3 format? Like with the current generation CD drives.
My CD-ROM is a 12x (1995) and doesn't do DAE (digital audio extraction).
When ripping you have to pipe the music through the sound card, analogue.
That means you can only play the audio CD in real time. Ripping a typical
3-minute pop song takes about 33 minutes. Ergh.

cheers
