After some work on a floor I'd like to have a carpet re-laid.
If anyone has used such a fitter could you let me know who they are
and how much they cost. I'm currently looking for one under the fifty
pounds mark. I've done a trawl of the yellow pages and that's the only
offer (never mind best) so far.
Please e-mail me if you can help me.

Can't you do it yourself? My mum fitted her own carpet not so long
ago and she's a pensioner. Mind you, she managed to borrow the
appropriate tools :-)

No. If you post a help wanted thingy to a newsgroup then you should
at least have the courtesy to read the group.

I don't know as I've never tried. However, I am a bit paranoid about not
doing it right and then ending up with a ruined carpet.

Therein lies the rub. I did ask about hiring the tools and they can be
as expensive as paying someone to do it.

Its an access thing (or lack of it) versus need to get someone soon.
I can set up a .forward to get the e-mail much more easily.
Sorry, I didn't realise I'd offended anyone by asking to be e-mailed.

I assume it's not one of those horrible foam-backed things. If it is then you
(a) hope the foam hasn't disintegrated too much, (b) put it on the floor, and
(c) perhaps put a few tacks in here and there to stop it moving. Otherwise...
If should have been stretched when it was first laid and if it's been down for
a while it probably won't need re-stretched. Just lay it out, smooth any
lurks out, hook it onto the grippers (careful; they're vicious!), and push the
edges down around the skirting. You're unlikely to need a knee-kicker, though
a flat tool like a brick bolster might help get the edges done.
