Intelligent Interface Technology (IIT) includes any application of
knowledge-based, or artificial intelligence techniques to interface
development. In this sense it encompasses other terms such as 'adaptive
system', 'intelligent (user) interface' or 'adaptive interface' as well
as including agent-based interaction. The aim of this workshop is to
examine the realities of this technology.
Many claims are now being made by software developers that their systems
use agents, or have an intelligent user interface. However, often these
claims seem excessive: a database query can be described as if it were
an agent (users simply state what they want and the query 'agent'
searches the database and finds it!), a spell-checker can be described
as behaving intelligently in that it makes suggestions. Many of the best
state-of-the art agents employ very simple algorithms in order to make
recommendations of music or web sites that people might like. To what
extent are such 'wizards' intelligent?
Such applications seem a long way from the theoretical view of
intelligent interface technology and from the visions of
'indirect management instead of direct manipulation'. The purpose of
this workshop is to explore the realities of intelligent interface
technology - both at the present time and for the next few years.
