Hi all --

Check out "Kenzie Goes Shopping" and "Factory Farms" under the files
sections. These are great powerpoints put together by Joel Dalton's
daughters for a presentation at their school. Perfect for kids and
those who may be just getting up to speed and really don't yet want to
know some of the brutal realities of the industrialized food system.
It also poses really important and EASY changes we can all make in
regards to choosing food.

Take care,

vb

Victoria,

I finally had a chance to go through these, and love them. I could use
them for a few adults I know:) I wonder if anyone has thought of using
them to create a teaching unit and working with local schools as part
of a formal education program.....

I think they're wonderful too!

I'm working with my church so that they'll use them for a 3-year
initiative called Celebrate the Planet. Also, I met with the
elementary principle from my district this morning about my soon-to-be-
kindergarter and we discussed the ppt's. He's going to see if they can
be used as part of a Healthy Choices initiative that the district is
using.

If anyone choses to use them and puts together teaching units, please
share with the group.

Joel -- I know you're busy, but can you share with the group what your
presentation of the slide shows was like. I could try to explain...but
I fear that I'd jumble it up too much.

Victoria -

I'm glad people like those!  They were well-received by our Penguin Care Club kids, actually.  What you can't see is the Demetri Martin style flip charts with maps to illustrate the choices between local organic versus distant organic versus local factory farm vs distant factory farm vs far away fruit vs. local fruit, etc. ... ( Demetri Martin - (beware of borderline rude ideas... which are okay with me.:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcwfdFT1ohE&feature=related )

The kids really liked the powerpoints.  We were a little worried that some little kids might not understand that animals actually get killed, so we didn't bring it up - - - but of course, THEY did.  And it was fine.  They were really into making the choices in the Kenzie ppt.  We also showed a Google Earth map with the images from that email showing photos of what families ate around the world and how much it cost.  We put the pics on a Google Earth tour and took the tour around the world and spent some time dissecting what the food was in the pictures.

It was all good and really eye opening to some kids (especially the CAFOs - they weren't happy about the water pollution) - but there were no issues with kids getting freaked out our anything at all.  It really went well!

And then John Harnoi talked to them about chickens and turkeys.  It was a good day.
