Hello,
I am new to this group. I am interested in trying to do a CSA this
year, but most of the ones I have contacted are sold out. Does anyone
know anything about Our Family Farm in manchester (Farmer John), or
know of another CSA that still has some openings for this growing
season?

Thanks in advance,
Kathleen

Hi Kathleen,

I just signed up my family for Our Family Farm's 1/2 share.  (We previously had a share with Garden Works, but they stopped doing the CSA subscriptions, so this will be our first year with Farmer John & Lois.)  I have bought produce and eggs from them last year occasionally and enjoyed them.  OFF is not certified organic, but they do not use pesticides or synthetic fertilizers.  Last year John told me he was using some fertilizers, but I don't know what his plans are this year.  He is trying something unique and flexible, in that you get to choose what you want in your share "box" from what he's brought to the market that day.   So if you hate turnips, you can pass on them.

And full disclosure -   I have also contracted with him to grow a couple hundred pounds of green beans for my frozen CSA business.  He is a character, boisterous, fun to jaw with, and always has an opinion.

Have you tried using localharvest.org to find other CSAs who might still have shares available?

Best regards,

Hi Rena,
Thanks so much for your reply.

I spoke to Farmer John on the phone and he told me about not being "certified organic," but that he follows the principles, etc.  I *think* he said he uses Miracle Grow. Course my 5 yr old was talkign in a rather loud voice and maybe I got that wrong. Is that safe? I don't know? I have it on my mind to look into that a little further.

The only other one that I'm still waiting to hear from is the Community Farm of A2. Not sure if they have shares available or if it's even possible to do 1/2 share with them.
Thanks, Kathleen

Your frozen food CSA is a wonderful idea! I sent you an email re:

Rena - Would you mind posting more informaiton about your business?
There may be others (like me) intersted in the details.

This looks great! Is the produce grown biodynamically? Organically? Sorry if I missed that somewhere...
