Celebrate Community Solutions in Oakland!

Rather than have its regularly scheduled meeting in November, the Local Clean Energy Alliance will have its meeting in conjunction with
Community Convergence for Climate Action event. Please plan to join us there.

In Oakland, we're taking a stand to demand climate solutions that clean our air, create green-collar jobs, save us money, and improve public health.

Join the Oakland Climate Action Coalition in celebrating and supporting community-based solutions we're calling for in Oakland's emerging Energy and Climate Action Plan.

WHEN: November 18, 2009, 6 - 8 pm
WHERE: Laney College Theater
900 Fallon St.  @ 9th St., Oakland

Don't miss this inspiring evening of live performances, free food, and community as we showcase the solutions that will make Oakland a model green city.

Convened by the Ella Baker Center, the Oakland Climate Action Coalition is a cross-sector coalition of community-based social justice organizations, environmental experts and advocates, labor unions, and green businesses working for an equitable and just Energy and Climate Action Plan for Oakland.

The Local Clean Energy Alliance is a proud member of the Coalition. We serve on the Steering Committee, and play leading roles on these subcommittees: Building and Energy Use, Climate Adaptation Planning, Media and Communications, and the Port of Oakland.

Marin Energy Authority gets $85,000 loan from county

The Marin Energy Authority received an $85,000 loan from the county of Marin on Tuesday, the final allotment of more than $500,000 previously promised to the authority by county supervisors.

The authority needs the money to follow through on a plan to compete with Pacific Gas and Electric Co. as a retailer of electricity in order to reduce Marin's greenhouse emissions. The county gave the authority a $210,000 loan last month.

The power of collaboration

San Francisco and Marin County may jump into the public power business together.

Both have been developing plans to buy electricity in bulk for their residents, taking over a role long played by Pacific Gas and Electric Co. Now San Francisco Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi said he plans to talk with some of his counterparts in Marin about possibly combining efforts.

In a conference call with reporters on Monday, he offered few details of how such a collaboration would work. But he said the two counties might be able to negotiate better power prices if they worked together.

Money Flows for PG&E Power Initiative

If money talks in politics, it positively shouts when it comes to California initiative campaigns.

Take, for example, the ongoing effort to qualify a ballot measure that would require a two-thirds vote before local governments could spend the first nickel to get into the public power business.

The effort is being run by a group with the populist-friendly name of “Californians to Protect Our Right to Vote,” although the required disclaimer adds that it has “major funding from Pacific Gas & Electric, a coalition of taxpayers, environmentalists, renewable energy, business and labor.”

Actually, that wide-ranging coalition of disparate interests is pretty much invisible, since every dollar of the $3.5 million that’s flowed into the effort so far comes from PG&E.

San Francisco Requests Bids for an Alternative to PG&E: Local Power-Assisted RFP Seeks New 51% Green Power Supply for Residents

A Major Local Power Inc. Milestone: Following Marin, SF Releases Long-Awaited Request For Proposals (RFP) to Solicit Bids from a New Power Service Supplier to Provide Residents and Businesses Dramatically Greener Power, Build 360 MW of Local Green Power Facilities Starting in 2010.

San Francisco, CA, November 09, 2009 -- The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) today released a Request for Proposals authorized by City leaders to implement the Community Choice Aggregation Program, known as CleanPowerSF. Co-drafted by the San Francisco Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCo) with technical assistance of Local Power, Inc. following a decade of preparation, the RFP invites bids to provide a new electricity service to San Franciscans that consists of 51% renewable energy and demand technologies by 2017, and provides municipal financing for development of at least 360 Megawatts of new solar photovoltaics, smart grid, local wind, cogeneration, energy efficiency technologies and other local green power.
