But that doesn't even make any sense to me. I've been watching video tutorials for both AutoCAD 2014 and specifically for the Mac version, and I can't figure out what the "Home tab" is, or what the "Layers panel" is, either. I'm guessing they mean the layers palette? But that doesn't have any button called "Copy Objects to New Layer". The title clearly says AutoCAD 2014 for Mac, so I'm not looking at the wrong help.
Also, why does this site disable my spell checker in Safari? It won't automatically underline misspelled words. And when I force it to check, right clicking on an incorrect word no longer shows any suggestions.
When it asks for the layer name and specifies "< name> [name]", what does that mean? I tried to type only the layer name, but that didn't work, so I made sure dynamic input was on and chose it from the menu that comes up.
I still don't understand why AutoCAD, even the lesser Mac version, doesn't have an easy way to duplicate a layer. Is this something that most people simply don't do? Do they have other workflows that don't require the need to duplicate objects and layers in the way I'm trying to do?
Part of that has to do with the structure of the data. While many think of entities existing on a layer, in fact its the other way around: the layer name is a property of each entity. This means that a layer doesn't directly "know" which objects are on it. In order to copy all entities on a layer to another layer, first all entities in the drawing must be checked to see if they are on the source layer or not. Those which are can then be copied (individually - again, this is a method of the entity, not the layer) and then the layer property of those copies is changed to the destination layer name.
Yeah, but I would have thought that if a 3rd party can make a script that can accomplish the task, that Autodesk would have the skills to implement such a feature by now, regardless of the underlying architecture. That's why I was wondering if maybe my workflow is simply not the correct way to do things in AutoCAD.
Is there any other way to duplicate a layer's content to a new layer? A workaround of some kind?
I'm not familiar with AutoLISP routines- plus when I downloaded the file, it doesn't appear to need unzipping- I can't seem to find a folder to put it in that includes a startup sequence...I must be doing something wrong- or perhaps it's because I'm using the student version?
thanks for quick responding, im using autocad for mac but it turned out that I could move the lines that I was working on to another layer just by right clicking on the mouse and move to layer im learning
The only way I can open a new drawing is by restarting Autocad so it shows the Startup menu. It is really incovenient since I have to close every drawing that I'm workng on so that I can open a new one. This has been happening for a while now.
If there is no Template folder in correct location and resetting (reinstalling) AutoCAD doesn't help you, than you may have permissions issues and AutoCAD cannot create Template folder during installation / resetting.
Of course, you can try to create this folder manually somewhere inside your Home folder and change the path to Template in AutoCAD preferences, but you should consider to resolve permissions problems on your Mac.
I had forgotten to hold option while acessing the templates through my finder. Now I can see them externally through the path in the applications preferences (but only while pressing option on the GO menu )
The real problem continues though. When I try to open a new drawing THROUGH the autocad menu (while I'm working on something else) (File>New drawing) (attachment 1) none of the templates appear and it is simply an incovenience having to either open up the welcome screen again or find the templates through finder.
As I wrote before, if you can find templates in Finder (via Go menu) you can copy them to the folder which is accessible from AutoCAD and change path to templates in AutoCAD preferences. This could be workaround in your situation.
I'm very new to Autocad and I'm running a Mac with Autocad 2013 education version. I've been trying to save a new template .dwt file. But when I go to save as and save it as a .dwt file and click ok, it acts as if it was saved but it never does. There is no new file in that folder. I tried creating a different folder in a different file location and still no luck. I haven't had any trouble saving .dwg files. I also removed the program and tried reinstalling it, but still didn't work.
I just tried to save a template on my home screen in a new folder i created.. Once again i opened it and there is nothing inside. nothing was saved and the title bar is still reading the same "Drawing1.dwg"
No it is not showing a dwt file that i tried to save in there.. And i tried saving a dwt file in several locations. i.e. the default location, then a folder in a new location and even on my desktop.. all with no luck
When i teach AutoCAD (yes, it take place sometimes - I give free lessons to my colleges) - I always ask them to look at the command prompt carefully, because it is the place where AutoCAD interacts with you, so please: look at the command line.
Wow! That's such a departure from Mac user interface conventions, but somewhat consistent with autocad conventions (you really shouldn't go from an OS dialog box (e.g. save-as) to an application command line in order to complete a task.
Nonetheless, so glad I found this thread, even in 2019 it is still relevant for Mac, but apparently not for Windows as I was following a Udemy course in which the instructor was using Windows and definitely didn't have to do this step.
