I wanted to say thank you to Tar0milkteababy on the artist faceup explanation post and everyone who answered on the Krylon post! I greatly appreciate all your responses and help! Thank you so much again! ?
I got one of those blind box BJDs as my second doll, just to see what a strung BJD was like. I did not vibe with it. I bought it because I liked its outfit, but its cheap eyes, solid hair, and wide feet (it has those legs that just get wider and have no ankles) just made me feel very bleh about it. The confession is...I sold it to a thrift store. We were moving and downsizing, and I had no time or energy to try to sell it on eBay, so just to save some space I tossed it into the car when we took stuff to the store.
I just hope someone who would really appreciate it buys it. Even if they're a little kid who's going to play with it a little too hard. No matter what though I still have this guilt that a BJD doll should be treated more special than normal dolls, even if it's mass-produced.
I know that this hobby is relatively small, especially in regards to artists, and so there's a good chance that an artist might see your posts if you tag them or repost their stuff to your stories or whatever. so I have two scenarios of experience with this, both of which I don't really know what to do with.
The first: I post an artist's work that I like to my story. They reply to my story saying thank you for sharing. Every. Single. Time. I don't know what to say at this point; it's really nice that they take the time to reply and everything but after a couple times I just started to feel awkward about it and I don't know how to respond? "yeah no problem!" sounds kind of conceited, like I'm doing them a favor by sharing. "you're welcome" also sounds arrogant. "of course" is a little better (I think?) because to me it has the vibe of like "of course I'd post your work, it's amazing" but still kind of awkward? idk man maybe I'm just too socially awkward for this.
The second scenario: I have a doll from a popular artist that I purchased secondhand from a hobbyist with a lot of followers. I post a picture of my doll, tagging the sculpting artist, the faceup artist, and the artist who sewed their clothes. The (sculpting) artist likes my photo, but doesn't share it to their story. Like three other people who have a doll by them post them at around the same time (like within a day or even a few hours), and the artist posts theirs to their story. What am I doing wrong? Is it because I didn't purchase the doll directly from them so we don't have that customer relationship? Is it because I don't have as many followers as the other accounts? I'm no photographer, but I can't really see a huge difference in the quality/content of my posts vs. the others'. Idk; it just feels a little bad lmao.
People who complain "DoA is dead" to steer away others annoy mean. Yeah, it kind of is. But instead of directing people there to liven it up again, we're telling them not to bother? There's a wealth of information in some of those forum members. If we can grow a community and interact with each other on there, that will help solve the "dead" problem.
I just saw some H0pefulcreation dolls yesterday, a translucent pink one and some others. They are not my cup of tea, too small, but the bodies are extremely cute. The faces are a bit too childlike for me, but the engineering doesn't look half bad.
I commished a custom faceup for an OC doll about a year ago and its lovely and looks great but I kindof wanna replace it for something more accurate and I feel so guilty. The artist follows me and I dont want them to feel persoanlly offended but ? I cant really sell it since hes rly specificly painted too
Kmdll is an independent studio that creates hinge-jointed doll with PVC. They are very similar to Imomo and are usually considered to be on par with each other. They do not have an official website, and their main social media is on Weibo. However, they are trying to spread their wings and they joined a doll convention in Shanghai last week. They have, to date, 2 heads and one body (and 1 full set).
I hope some artists consider opening orders for some of their 1/3 sculpts or heads again. Migid0ll and Little Reb3l come to mind. I left the hobby for a while, but now that I'm back I have a couple heads I want to get from them, and it's hard to find the ones I want second hand. T_T
(I post nearly everything within a few weeks, but any generally abusive confessions don't get posted because they don't fulfil the rules, so we're unlikely to be seeing this lady/gents fantastic opinions anytime soon)
For the individual that was super sad about never knowing when Do Dolls Dr3am holds their preorders, the next preorder is for the Teacups and is estimated to be held in September! I hope this helps!! They are posting lots of beautiful prototype pictures right now so go check them out!!
I went to a historical reenactment this weekend, and it bothered me so bad that the outfits were so inaccurate that I started planning a doll just to recreate some of the clothing more accurately. Why am I like this? ?
More of a tip then a confession but you can use temporary tattoos on fabric, specifically saying this if you wanna make custom graphic tees for your dolls. you can have a tattoo custom made with a graphic you made/found too and have it be fully unique. I am putting my boy in an anime shirt bc of this
I think the typical blind box bjds are a great gateway to resin bjds and shouldn't be strictly excluded from bjd spaces but I, too, am getting a little tired of them. There are so many releases that they are a separate microcosm themselves honestly, and given that most don't customise or do much else with them, they are more like collectibles in my eyes. Nendoroid/ob11 are usually off-topic in bjd spaces and I don't really see why the very similar blind box bjds should be deemed as a more on-topic thing. I also think people who mainly collect blind box bjds/mjds would be happy to engage in more dedicated communities as well, as they, too, have their own specific perks and aesthetics (different parts and places to buy from, people looking for swaps etc) that don't necessarily have overlap with resin bjds.
I do agree that they are affordable and a great alternative to point people towards so they don't end up getting a recast because they just want a doll without the big commitment. But a person who wants a Minifee Chloe on a budget will not be satisfied with any tiny thing that poses in any case and will then take either path to acquire what they wanted in the first place. Or they get one and are then disappointed that they can't be customised the same way like bigger dolls can.
Furthermore, what does cluck/confess/verbose even do? I've ran this short script to get an idea of the output looks like (because the Carp docs don't do it). It looks exactly the same on any run (besides the random strings).
UPDATE: Updated the script with package names and it does make a difference. However, Carp still seems to be very basic in terms of logging information, and it doesn't support web output. I guess I'll look at other ones like CGI::Carp, Log::Output, and Log::Log4Perl.
Carp is intended to be used in modules. The reason is that when a module encounters a problem, it's often because the module's caller passed it bad data. Therefore, instead of reporting the line where the module discovered the problem, it's usually more useful to report the line where the module was called (from code outside the module). That's what the functions exported by Carp do.
The verbose option forces backtraces on. That is, it makes carp act like cluck, and croak act like confess. You can use that when you realize that you need more debugging information, but don't want to change the code to use confess.
Carp is better than warn/die in that it will display the file and line of what called the function throwing an error, rather than simply where the error was thrown. This can often be useful for libraries. (For instance, a database library should probably throw errors indicating where the erroneous database call is, rather than indicating a line within itself.)
The first step is to have the right intention. Everything should stem from our relationship with Christ and our desire to grow closer to him. As Fr. Mike Schmitz says in his video Making a Good Confession:
So, do I really want to be holier or do I just want to be nicer? There is a critical difference in motives between the two. The former focuses on God and what God thinks of me, while the latter focuses on me and what people think of me. Holiness focuses on the one eternal relationship; niceness focuses on temporary, earthly relationships.
