This version of macOS builds on Big Sur, bringing Shortcuts and a range of features that are also part of iOS and iPadOS 15. As of the first beta, Monterey does not include any new nature wallpapers as previous releases has.

First things first, some shameless self promotion! I create EVE wallpapers from post-processed screenshots among other things and maintain a Flickr gallery with now over a thousand images, most in high resolution (4k+).

Then, open the CachedFiles folder. Inside should be one or more JPG files, each named like this: CachedImage_2560_1440_POS4.jpg (substitute the numbers with your resolution's width and height). Find the one that matches your active resolution, copy its filename, then delete all the files. Copy your wallpaper's JPG version into this folder as well and rename it to whatever you just copied. The actual resolution of the wallpaper does not matter; as far as I could tell, Windows just reuses whatever wallpaper setting was set. ('Fill' for me)

So I decided to look around into the settings on the jpg, nothing unusual that I could see, the image was 1900x1200 at 72.009dpi and 8bit. I decided to scale down my own personal wallpapers to the 1900x1200 size, changed the dpi and bitrate to match the other jpg. After saving my new image, I right clicked on it and chose set to desktop, the resulting image has no artifacts and is no longer compressed. This works for every wallpaper I have.

If you try this, I think you need to make sure you change the image dimensions to match that of what your screen resolution is exactly. Also making sure the dpi is set to 72.009 and 8bit. Try it out, see if this helps anyone. I will be posting this message on all the forums and blogs I see discussing this.

I used the workaround of scaling down my wallpaper to the screen size of my laptop with Gimp in Windows 8. Since I use a transparent PNG from a vector graphic source I just wanted to change the background gradient and also try if a larger version would look better after migrating to Windows 10 or if any other changes were made. So I remade my wallpaer in the original resolution of 5000x2813 pixels with the old background gradient and the new gradient in PNG (processed with optipng -o7) and JPG (Gimp: quality 98%, progressive, subsampling 4:4:4, same settings as for the custom downscaled one). Result: the outlines look very smooth (better than the previous result with the workaround, but Gimps resizer may be to blame here) when using the big JPG and almost no banding artifacts on the primary laptop display (the banding may be caused by the panel itself). There are still noticable resizing artifacts on the external 1080p monitor, which may be the result from upscaling the wallpaper of the primary laptops resolution of 1600x900 (to avoid confusion: of course I use the external monitor as an extension at native resolution).

Also, since you're down-scaling an image you might want to edit/resize it using photoshop to the native resolution of your monitor. Windows is known to produce low quality (ie. rough) downscaling of images and produces the occasional artifacts on wallpapers.

Just upgraded to Sonoma on my 2023 Macbook and am trying to use the wallpapers. Some of the Landscape wallpapers do not fit my screen properly. It seems to be too high of a resolution as I am only able to see a portion of the picture. There doesn't seem to be any controls to fit the picture to the screen. I am trying to use the Scotland ones. I also did a bit of digging and found that those wallpapers are .mov files rather than a picture file like jpg or png. Can you even change the resolution of .mov files?

I am using Apple Studio Display (which is a 5K monitor), Sonoma wallpapers are blurry except one "Sonoma Horizon" which was the default wallpaper when I installed Sonoma for the first time. All the other wallpapers are either seem to be cropped or not crystal clear. I guess it might be fixed in future updates

Thank you xaru_fushigi for confirming the problem. Apple has been really promoting these new "motion" wallpapers/screen savers. It's unfortunate that they have been implemented improperly as it is a nice touch in the aesthetics department. There are a A LOT of these new wallpapers/screensavers included with Sonoma, but as I said, they are simply unusable - not sure how this could have gotten into the final release. Again, thanks for confirming.

I am having the same/similar issue. I am running a 4K external display connected to my M1 16" MBP. Everything has been crystal clear until Sonoma. ALL (yes, every single one) of the new "motion" wallpapers/screensavers are BLURRY. Maybe they were shot in 5K and look fine on the Apply display? - Not sure. All I know is that all mine do not scale properly @ 4K and are noticeably blurry to the point where they are UNUSABLE. I believe this is happening because it is taking a single frame from the motion shot and using it for the still background when not in motion. Each individual frame is not necessarily "in focus", but when set in motion you do not notice because it is essentially a .mov file.

These wallpapers are actually Apple's screensavers / aerial movies taken from Apple TV. They can be downloaded in 4K as the maximum resolution and therefore look blurred on a 5K screen. This is most likely not a software issue. There is probably just no 5K material (yet).

If you want to rotate between curated wallpapers, choose either Canvas - light or Canvas - dark depending on whether you want the devices to be in light mode or dark mode.
For more information go to The Canvas Project for Google Meet.

After the new software update (April 2022, One UI 4.1), I've been experiencing an issue with my lock screen wallpaper. The quality of the image changes after setting it as wallpaper. The image becomes low resolution and the colors were different from the original. I even tried it in samsung default wallpapers. On the other hand, there's no issue with my home screen wallpaper. I tried to screenshot my lock screen but the photo looks fine. Is this a bug on the new update? Is anyone experiencing the same issue?

Your application has most likely failed. Try reinstalling the app. If the problem persists, then it's worth checking your phone settings. I have never used the wallpaper app. I usually look for beautiful wallpapers on Pinterest or use those Samsung offers. I recently downloaded a cool wallpaper at -wallpapers/. I always share useful links where you can find something interesting and valuable. I like to set a beautiful wallpaper on the lock screen and my computer's desktop. Most often, I choose pictures with motivational phrases.

All the photos are in their original 16:10, in the 5k (if there's such a resolution) 5120 x 3200 as I wanted users to be able to position the desktops as they see fit. Also adding Light / Dark desktops as I have time.

While none of these upscales are nearly as good as a high-resolution photo, ML upscaling provides a much better result in a pinch. The ML upscaling is much better at preserving details in the image, such as Mr. Orange's whiskers, his fur, and his pet tag, while providing nice soft results on the areas out of focus. ML (machine learning) upscaling has become popular with modern GPUs. In Windows, AMD and NVidia GPUs can take a videogame rendered at 1440p and upscale it to 4k as it takes less effort for the GPU to upscale the image than it takes to render an image with a lot more pixels, enabling the GPU to churn out higher frame rates and keeping more visual fidelity than using bilinear upscaling. Of course, machine learning isn't limited to uspcaling (or even images).

If you've been using the element to provide a single custom background image for your front-of-room displays, you can continue using it if it suits your needs. However, if you want to provide separate custom backgrounds for each front-of-room display, or replace your existing backgrounds with higher resolution images, or configure a custom background on your touch console, you need to use the elements provided in this section.

Front-of-room displays and touch consoles have minimum supported custom background resolutions. For front-of-room displays, the minimum supported resolution is 1920 x 1080. For touch consoles, the minimum supported resolution is 1280 x 720. If the resolution of any custom background is below the minimum supported resolution for the display or console it's added to, all displays default to No Theme.

The recommended custom background resolution for front-of-room displays and touch consoles depends on their aspect ratios. The following lists the aspect ratios supported by each display and the recommended resolution for each.

Custom backgrounds with resolutions lower than the recommended resolution but higher than the minimum supported resolution are scaled to fill the frame of the display and are then center-cropped. The original aspect ratio of the custom background is maintained.

Designing images at standard resolutions for wallpapers, that can fit onto any desktop screen or mobile device can be a challenge. The most popular wallpaper resolutions for digital wallpapers change depending on the devices that the users are using. There are a few factors to keep in mind such as:

The following resolutions show wide and ultrawide resolutions. Check the monitor display that you are using for any references of wide or ultrawide, alternatively follow the above instructions on checking your current desktop background size on either Windows 10 or Apple Mac. The background size will also be the same for screensaver size images you may want to use.

The following resolutions are the most common HD and UHD resolutions for HD desktop wallpapers. Images of these sizes will give you a fullscreen wallpaper that you can use for desktop backgrounds and even screensavers.
