Double checking, will this affect the GNG app, or is it technically an extension?

Migrate off Chrome apps before June 1, 2022.

Hello Chrome App Developer,

As we previously announced in 2016, changes in support for Chrome Apps on Windows, MacOS and Linux will begin starting March 2020. We are writing to let you know the details about this plan, along with some important updates about ending Chrome app support on Chrome OS.

What do I need to know?

Starting this year, we will no longer provide support according to the following schedule. Please note, these timelines are for Chrome Apps only, and do not impact Chrome Extensions.

Scheduled Date Action
March 2020 Chrome Web Store will stop accepting new Chrome apps
June 2020 Chrome Apps on Windows, Mac, and Linux will no longer be supported. Customers who have Chrome Enterprise or Chrome Education Upgrade will have access to a policy to extend support through December 2020.
June 2021 NaCl, PNaCl, and PPAPI APIs will no longer be supported. Chrome Apps on Chrome OS will no longer be supported. Customers who have Chrome Enterprise or Chrome Education Upgrade will have access to a policy to extend support through June 2022.
June 2022 Chrome Apps will no longer be supported on Chrome OS for all customers.

What do I need to do?

  • Assess your alternatives and plan to migrate off Chrome Apps to other solutions in the coming months, such as Progressive Web Apps (PWAs), Android apps (for Chrome OS), and/or Chrome Extensions.
  • Migrate before June 2021, keeping your users in mind so that they have sufficient time to switch to your new product.

Need more help?

We are here to help. If you are a Chrome Apps developer and need assistance, please review the following options:

  • Chrome Apps migration site documenting relevant web platform APIs and how to file a feature request.
  • Web capabilities site has additional technical support.
  • Resources for PWAs and Android development.
  • Reach out to your assigned Google Partner Manager or Developer Relations Team if you have one.

On behalf of the Chrome and Chrome OS teams, we thank our community of developers for building great experiences. We look forward to seeing what you build in the future!

Sincerely,

Chrome Team

Hi,

Thanks for the question regarding the upcoming deprecation/shutdown of Chrome Apps. We are working with various internal partners/teams to establish our migration strategy and hope to have more information to share with you all in the coming weeks/months.

Regarding the matter of Chrome Web Store not accepting new Chrome Apps starting in March, this will only affect new deployments (not existing ones). We are discussing how we can support new app deployments after this date, but don't yet have any information to share on that. I do believe that you will be able to continue deploying through external means (outside of the Chrome Web Store) per our early discussions with partner teams.

Again, thank you for the question and we hope to share more info with our external community soon.

Best,

Mike Helfrich
