Hey guys I'm going to move from France and browsing search job engine.
And at my surprise London got like 20 times more jobs from other countries like Paris, Zurich for tech like ruby, node and all the great stuff.
Could you please explain me why?
Is there a lack of skilled people?
Is there a big growth at the moment in the city?
Is the turn over high?
Thank you for your help !

London is the new silicon valley. Massive growth.

When we started Red Badger in May 2010 there were 200 startups in East London. 3 years later there were 1300.

iOS recruitment isn't my forte but what's happening in it is the same as the Rails market which is my speciality. Basicly we're in another dot com bubble but this time right now is probably analogous to 1996. Massive investment, limited number of developers.

The reason London has emerged is probably as it's so close to the source of investment (London city/Canary wharf etc), that and the meet ups for the relevant languages are particularly strong (at least it is in Ruby).

Best, Louis

Remember that London is one of the largest cities in Europe and that in the last few decades there was a huge focus on the services industry in the UK, particularly in London.

Add to that the fact that yes, there is indeed a lot of money floating around, the government has had some initiatives to bill it as a tech hub (mostly bullshit initiatives but still attracted attention), technology and software are growing a lot in the past few years and you suddenly get a pretty huge job market around technology.

It's also partly annoying that this is all mostly focused on one city which is already so huge and expensive because these sort of jobs don't exactly need to be located in London. So don't be surprised when you see huge numbers in terms of salaries because a good part of it will have to pay for your life there.

There are 6 million people living in London. Paris and Zurich aren't really comparable. There is a LOT of work here. Turn over is relatively high because if you are good you can choose your job and there are a lot of crappy jobs out there too.

Having been a developer for over a decade I would say yes there is a lack of experience. I see companies struggling to hire at the level of expertise they would like to run enterprise level projects and digital agencies seem to struggle to hire good Ruby devs. One theory put forward to me was Ruby devs tend to go into startups so there are less people offering it as a contractor, most digital agency back end devs are doing PHP or .NET.

Node is too young to have an active experienced job market and there aren't enough skilled JS devs or full stack devs to cover the gap or move over into Node. The majority of front end devs are primarily CSS developers who can do some jQuery and not necessarily application developers so there is definitely a skills shortage there.
