Prairie maintenance question

Hi Charles & other prairie experts,
What is the best way to remove sweetgum & other trees that come up in my prairie? I am in the city limits and got away with burns twice over 10 years, but now that Marc Pastorek moved, that's out of the question. I'll be mowing end of January/ early February. Should I just:
1) mow them - I know they'll grow back. Do the root systems increase & mess with prairie plants in any way?
2) cut them at the ground & paint the stumps with roundup - poison!
3) pull them up by the root with my weed wrench - disturbs the soil.
