Ladies and Gentlemen,
A reminder that this Saturday, June 23, will be the annual NABA Count at the Kisatchie unit in Natch. Parish. This count has been used in the past to monitor the Meske's Skipper population at this site, one of only 2 known sites in the State where it has been found. Although I can make no guarantees, Saturday, the 23rd, was chosen to again see how many and where within the unit this skipper can be found.
The count will start at 9:30 at the picnic area and bathrooms just off the Scenic Byway. I hope to arrive early (9:00) to set some baited traps at one of the bayous in the unit where So. Pearly-eyes, Gemmed Satyrs, Snouts, Hackberry Emps and even a couple of Harvesters have been seen in the past. I will be in touch with Jeff Trahan and will meet up with everyone probably in the area of the hillside pitcher plant bog (the main Meske's Skipper area).
We saw 33 species and over 500 individual butterflies last Sat. at Catahoula NWR, although it took some effort in the heat. We will spread out in groups so we can maximize coverage of the unit. I would ask that anyone interested in participating let me know so we know who to expect and have an idea of how many people will be available to divide into groups. Jeff, when you have a moment, please call me so we can discuss areas to cover and by whom.
It will be hot! Wear a hat. Bring plenty of water. Also, bring your lunch as there is no place to get food any place close. Wear protective clothing and shoes/boots. Ticks can be bad at this unit so bring bug spray. Looking forward to seeing everyone.
