Dear Atul,
I am really very shocked to know the whole incident that happened with you day before yesterday. I could understand the kind of trauma, anguish and disappointment that you are going through at your personal front. On the other hand I thank God that you are safe physically and financially  after this incident. It is great lesson to all of us to avoid going out at night as far as possible. As you have written it is really difficult sometimes to file FIR with police. I hope situation improves in future with the new government in Delhi. It is really good to see that you are fighting the case with the media people. That is the way.

We as LNMIIT community are very much with you at this distressful hour. I am forwarding this mail to other students as well as to faculty and staff of our institute. Please let us know if any of us can be of any service to you in this crisis hour.

With Regards
Amit Neogi

Hello Friends,

I’m writing this letter to bring your attention to an unfortunate incident that happened with me yesterday in the morning of 19 Feb. 2015. I was kidnapped and robbed at gunpoint by some robbers on NH-24 near Vijaynagar, Ghaziabad while returning home from office at 3:30am after completing my shift.

I am an engineer by profession working at Tech Mahindra, Sector-64, Noida. I was stealthily followed by some robbers in 2 cars and was forcibly stopped on NH-24, which is the one of the busiest roads in Delhi NCR region, around 3:45 AM in the morning of 19 February. One of the robbers posed as a policeman demanded my driving license after stopping me and made me come out of my car and then 2 others pushed me on the backseat of the car by neck at gunpoint.

I didn't have a choice but to surrender. Then they drove me in my car to some distance and stopped at an ATM. After a couple of blows and slaps, they took away my cellphone, company issued laptop and some other belongings. I was fortunate to have forgotten my wallet at home so they couldn't find much use of me without any cash or debit/credit cards. After taking the stuff and threatening me, they let me go with the car.

After coming back home, I dialed 100 and reported the case to police. 2 PCR vans came and police took down the details of the incident and consoled me and asked me to visit the police station later in the morning to file an FIR. During this conversation, police came to know through the wireless radio that one of the cars which stopped me was stolen /robbed from Delhi.

Later in the morning same day, I was called by police and was asked to file complaint and said that they would take appropriate action and file FIR and behaved very friendly and sent me back home.

In the evening same day, I enquired on the status of the FIR and was shocked to hear the stupid reasons given by police to not have been able to file the FIR. Some of the reasons were having excess work and a lot of pending files. I could see the reluctance in filing the FIR.

The next day on 20th Feb, I visited the police station twice to get the FIR registered but was deeply distressed to hear the reasons and the apathy and reluctance shown in filing the FIR by police. The officer on duty somehow agreed to take the FIR if I dropped the charges of my short term kidnapping and looting and only filed the charges of laptop snatching and that too only because it was a company issued laptop and had confidential data.

The policeman further went on to say so much as to ask me to possibly keep a GUN handy and a GUNNER if I was so concerned about my safety. Trying to figure out the level of apathy he was showing I asked him whether all employees working for IT companies now should keep the guns to which his response was – YES, ABSOLUTELY!

I had no further words. I left the police station.

Later after coming home, I reached out to my colleagues for help who further tried to contact some media people. I told them my story and they took down the details. A few hours later I got a call from police assuring me that they would file the FIR next day. I hope it goes well this time and I’m not forced to change my statement.

I am still traumatized and shudder thinking it could have been worse. They might even have killed me if I had resisted. There have been cases like this here in Noida and Ghaziabad before. It is the police’s negligence and attitude of warding victims off that many such cases aren’t even reported and criminals walk around all confident without fear.

All I can make out of this incident so far is that Noida and Ghaziabad are not safe for employees working particularly in night shifts. You can expect and get police respond actively only if you happen to have some contacts in the media or higher level officials in police department or some other government office that can make police act. No wonder IT employees always look for opportunities abroad and get out of India seeking a secure future.

I don’t know how this small informative letter would help improve the state of law and order in our country but I certainly would urge you all to spread this message to all you friends and family members as much as possible and raise the concern with your employers.  You could either wait until something similar or even worse happens to you, your wife, your brother or sister or we all can try to make some impact and make our organization heads to think about the gravity of the looming danger to their employees and bring about some strong changes in corporate security policies and demand safety from police authorities for all of us. This is our right, not a privilege.

Best regards,
