Subject: Dress Code Proposal Update / Will Be Moved At Thursday Meeting

Fellow Committee Members,

The feedback I've received about my dress code policy addition has been overwhelmingly fantastic. I appreciated the critiques and have worked with other officers on the board to recraft more suitable language for this proposal.

I understand why the previous motion was called out of order, but am confident that this new motion will work better for everyone.

This motion will be put forward at the in person LNC meeting on Thursday, and I want to give you all ample time to read it so you can make an educated and not-rushed decision on your vote.

Here's the language for my intended final draft:

Proposed Policy Manual Addition — Convention Decorum and Attire Standards

"Section X.X — Delegate and Speaker Attire Requirements

In order to preserve a professional atmosphere during all official sessions of the Libertarian Party National Convention, the following recommended minimum attire standards shall apply to all delegates, alternates, speakers, candidates, and individuals addressing the convention body from a microphone during official business sessions:

-Business casual attire should be considered the recommended minimum acceptable standard.

-Men should wear collared shirts or equivalent business casual attire.

-Attire commonly understood to be intentionally disruptive, overtly theatrical, fetish-oriented, or materially inconsistent with the professional conduct of convention proceedings should not be worn during official business sessions.

-Appropriate footwear should be worn for all participants engaging in convention floor business.

-Credentials/badges shall be visibly worn at all times during official sessions.

-Attire bearing profane, obscene, or sexually explicit language or imagery shall not be worn on the convention floor during official business sessions.

These standards should apply only during official convention business sessions and shall not govern private social events, hospitality functions, or unofficial gatherings associated with convention activities.

The recommended minimum attire and decorum standards established under this section shall also apply to official Libertarian National Committee business meetings conducted in person. Any LNC member, staff member, guest, or participant addressing the Committee during official proceedings should comply with the recommended minimum professional attire standards outlined herein."

Feel free to leave me feedback. I am happy to hear that so many of our members desperately want a more professionally branded Libertarian Party that facilitates a culture of excellence and higher standard for the world while embracing individualism as a professional looking collective.

In Liberty,

Ben Weir

I do believe we need to see more professionalism, including in appearance, as appearance is reality for many.  Although not the most important item of business ever, I do believe it is more important than others might think.
Mr. Weir has changed the proposed amendment to something much more amenable. Accordingly, I'll move the Policy Manual amendment on Mr. Weir's behalf:

"Section X.X — Delegate and Speaker Attire Requirements

In order to preserve a professional atmosphere during all official sessions of the Libertarian Party National Convention, the following recommended minimum attire standards shall apply to all delegates, alternates, speakers, candidates, and individuals addressing the convention body from a microphone during official business sessions:

Thank you, Mr. Bohler! I hope the others at the meeting this Thursday feel the same so that we can accomplish one last positive thing for the Party before the convention and before our terms end.

I appreciate the support and desire for a more professional appearance.

Looking forward to seeing the results of this vote!

Jesus fucking christ.  I'm usually silent about most things leaving them to McGee the R2 Rep... but are we seriously under the delusion that a policy manual change affects the delegates?  I certainly hope Mr. Weir understands that it would literally only effect members of the LNC and is STILL unenforceable.  While I absolutely agree we should stop sending people that look 1. Homeless as candidates and representatives of the party, and 2. Stop sending the furries as the public facing section of the party (they should all be free to do so as the see fit without force by the way) the LNC shouldn't dictate dress code.   Recommendations sure... he'll every state party should suggest their candidates be professional in appearance for those repping the banner... but to suggest a policy manual be passed (which is non binding among delegates, and also unenforceable)  laughable.  I enjoy the troll Ben... with that.  I wish you all the best as can be wished on a sinking ship.  This term I have watched the most ridiculous unprofessional bullshit and hope the next LNC has at least a modicum of experience in professional board governance otherwise this party will wither away.  I will NOT be seeing you all in Michigan, because I have better things to do than to fight among other Libertarians.

Mr. Johnson,

Glad to hear you also support holding our Party to a higher standard of professionalism and conduct. I think this proposal is a good place to start, and it certainly isn't a troll.

We've agreed and disagreed, but I wish you well in your future endeavors.

Thanks for the feedback.

Subject: Re: Dress Code Proposal Update / Will Be Moved At Thursday Meeting

Updated motion language:

Move to amend the LNC Policy Manual, Section 1.02 - Meetings, by adding a new subsection after “Open Meetings,” and renumbering subsequent subsections as necessary:
Professional Appearance and Decorum Guidelines
The Libertarian National Committee recognizes that the Libertarian Party is a national political organization whose public meetings, conventions, candidates, officers, representatives, speakers, and delegates are often observed by members, donors, voters, press, coalition partners, and the general public. The LNC further recognizes that professional appearance and decorum can affect the credibility and public reputation of the Party.
Accordingly, the following professional appearance and decorum guidelines are adopted for official in-person LNC meetings and are recommended for official business sessions of Libertarian Party national conventions:
  1. LNC members, alternates when seated or participating, officers, staff, candidates, speakers, guests, and persons addressing the LNC during official in-person proceedings should maintain a clean, sanitary, and reasonably professional appearance.
  2. Business casual attire should be considered the recommended minimum standard for official in-person LNC meetings. Examples include collared shirts, blouses, sweaters, jackets, slacks, skirts, dresses, or comparable neat attire.
  3. Attire need not be plain, conventional, or devoid of personal expression. Colorful, artistic, culturally significant, campaign-related, issue-related, or otherwise expressive attire is not discouraged, provided that it is reasonably consistent with the orderly and professional conduct of official proceedings.
  4. Participants should avoid attire, lack of attire, or displayed language or imagery that is reasonably likely to materially disrupt official proceedings, is profane, obscene, or sexually explicit, or would be inconsistent with the decorum expected of a national political committee conducting official business.
  5. Appropriate footwear should be worn during official in-person proceedings.
  6. If credentials, badges, or other identifying materials are issued for an official in-person LNC meeting, participants should wear them visibly while participating in the meeting area.
  7. These guidelines do not apply to private social events, hospitality events, informal gatherings, campaign events, or unofficial activities associated with Party meetings or conventions.
  8. Nothing in this subsection shall be construed to deny or impair the right of any LNC member, seated alternate, or properly recognized participant to attend, vote, debate, make motions, or otherwise exercise rights under the Bylaws, Policy Manual, or parliamentary authority. These guidelines are aspirational, except to the extent that a person’s conduct independently violates the Bylaws, Policy Manual, parliamentary authority, venue rules, or applicable law.
  9. The LNC recommends that future convention committees, convention planners, affiliates, delegations, candidates, speakers, and delegates consider these guidelines when preparing for official convention business sessions. This subsection does not establish a Convention Rule, Standing Rule of a Convention, credentials requirement, or basis for denying any delegate or alternate the right to participate in convention business.
