27. Summer Crime Prevention Tips
Most vehicle larcenies are preventable.  To help prevent them practice T.L.C.:
Take out your valuables – leave them home if you can, lock them in the trunk before your reach your destination if you can’t leave them home.
Lock your vehicle.
Close Doors & Windows – an open door or window allows a thief a quick and quiet way to enter your vehicle.

Organize a Neighborhood Watch – if you would like to learn more about how to improve your community with Neighborhood Watch, contact the Lansing Police Department’s Community Service Officer at 483-4469 or lpd...@lansingmi.gov.

Prevent bicycle and lawnmower theft by locking your bike to a stationary object.  The best lock is a hardened steel u-lock.  Make sure both wheels are locked and remove any accessories that can be easily taken.  Keep you mower in a locked garage or shed.  Record the model and serial numbers, and descriptions of your bikes and lawnmowers.

Don’t relax your home and yard security during the summer.  If you are working in the yard, lock your house and garage.  Learn how to “pin” your windows, which will prevent a burglar from forcing them open any further. Trim hedges to 3 feet for less. Use motion detector lighting at home entrances.  When going on vacation contact the Lansing Police at 483-7665 to arrange for a Vacation House Check.

Operation Identification is a nationally recognized citizens’ burglary prevention program in use for over 30 years.  The program marks your property with an id, inventories property and helps police identify and return stolen property.  For more information conact Officer Elton at 517 483 6812 to get your Operation Identification decal.

Help Protect our Kids by observing Lansing Curfew hours.  Curfew hours for children 12 and under: 10 pm – 6 am, 13 – 16 years old: Midnight – 6 am.  During curfew hours those under 17 may not be on any public street, highway, alley, park, vacant lot or other public place.  The curfew law helps reduce children becoming victims of crime, in addition to limiting the accessibility of children to commit crimes. Call 911 to report any youth disturbances after curfew.

Fireworks Safety Tips and Regulations  Fireworks are synonymous with our celebration of Independence Day.  Follow these safety tips when using fireworks: Never allow young children to play or ignite fireworks.  Always have adult supervison.  Parents don’t realize that children can suffer injuries from sparklers, which burn at 2,000 degrees.  Never place any part of your body director over a fireworks device. Backup immediately after lighting a fireworks. Never try to re-light or pick-up a fireworks device that haven’t fully ignited.  Never point or throw a fireworks at another person or property.  Keep a bucket of water or garden hose handy in case of a mishap.
Fireworks Ordinance (1615.02)  Consumer fireworks shall not be used in the City of Lansing without a license: 1. On any day except the day preceding, day of, and day after a national holiday. 2. 28. Adopt-a-Park
As part of the Parks and Recreation city mission, promoting community leisure gives the department the ability to “enhance the quality of life through preservation of maintenance and parklands.”  The adopt-a-park program supports this mission by giving Lansing the opportunity to become involved with the growth of city parks and neighborhoods.  Creating community begins with initiative and contribution from citizens who understand the importance of natural care and development.
By encouraging and utilizing volunteers to show community pride we hope to have cleaner, safer, and greater used parks.  We want neighborhood organizations, families, Boy and Girl Scout groups, and even businesses to be participants in the city wide program.
The City of Lansing’s Adopt-A-Park program aims to unite, support, and educate all people interested in preserving and maintaining our beautiful park system.
This volunteer program provides opportunities for volunteer groups to assist park staff and help keep Lansing’s parks and public areas safe, clean, and attractive.  Under the supervision of the Adopt-A-Park Coordinator, volunteer groups “adopt” a park, or a portion of a park, and agree to complete certain service projects during one year.  If interested in adopting a park, please contact Brett Kaschinske at 517-483-4042.

29. Capital Region Community Foundation Grant
The City of Lansing Parks and Recreation Department was awarded a grant through the Capital Region Community Foundation Community Improvement Capacity Building program to purchase a volunteer landscape tool trailer and tools.  This grant will allow the Parks Department to purchase and stock a tool trailer with rakes, clippers, shovels, wheelbarrows and various small hand tools.  Community volunteer groups and neighborhood associations wishing to assist the Parks Department with bettering our community through park clean-up projects and neighborhood beautification projects will be provided access to this invaluable resource.  The trailer will be taken to the designated site and will remain on the site for the duration of the project.  The Parks Department believes having the necessary equipment available to the community will assist with making all projects easier and very successful.  The Volunteer Landscape Tool Trailer will be in operation beginning in July 2014.  If any group is interested in organizing a community project, please contact Brett Kaschinske at 517-483-4042.

30. Opportunity to Participate in a Research Study of Medicaid Expansion in Michigan
On April 1st, the State of Michigan implemented a state-wide Medicaid Expansion, called the Healthy Michigan Plan (HMP). We are conducting a research study exploring peoples’ experiences and perceptions with accessing health care, to help inform how this expansion is being implemented.  The study is being conducted under the supervision of Dr. Linda Hunt, of the Department of Anthropology at Michigan State University, in collaboration with the Michigan Department of Community Health.

We are seeking volunteers over age 18 to participate in hour-long interviews to discuss the HMP Medicaid Expansion, and how it might impact access to healthcare. You do not need to have any previous knowledge about Medicaid or HMP to participate.  As a token of our appreciation for your participation, we will provide you a $25 gift card to a local grocery store. To see if you are eligible to participate, please contact Kristan Elwell or Allison Baker at (517) 884-0418.

31. CREGO PARK OPENS!
The City of Lansing Parks Department is pleased to announce the opening of Crego Park!  The City received a Michigan Natural Resource Trust Fund Grant in the amount of $500,000 with a local match of $250,000, for the development of Crego Park.   Crego Park is the City’s largest park at 200 acres.  The park entrance is located east of Aurelius Road off of Mt. Hope Road on Fidelity Road (across from Evergreen Cemetery).  This wonderful park boasts a 15 acre lake within the park which was recently stocked with Bluegill, Hybrid Bluegill and Crappie.  Along with Kruger Landing boat launch, which is located of Aurelius Road east of Potter Park zoo, an ADA approved accessible canoe/kayak launch has been installed on the lake.  The launch allows one to board their watercraft from a wheel chair without the fear of tipping over.   Other amenities include a parking lot for cars, car-trailer and busses as well as a fishing dock, shore watercraft launch, shore fishing locations, pathways, and a drinking fountain.  There is also a 1/3 mile pathway connection from the parking lot to the River Trail.  The park will be open from dawn to dusk each day and is a great new destination for family fun.

Just B Yoga is a community being built one bite at a time.

  • Healthy, fresh food should be affordable and accessible, just as we believe about yoga. Because food is yoga. Nothing creates connection for people more than food. Whole foods create whole-body health and wholesome connections.
  • Food can plant the seed for positive community growth. Imagine more time talking with each other, sharing and laughing whether in the garden, in the kitchen or at the dinner table.
  • Mindful. Present.
  • The Just B Yoga community has grown, cooked and shared on shoestring budgets.
  • Now we want to share with you.
  • Help us build and nourish community.
  • How do you do it? What are some of your favorite dishes?
  • Submit your recipe TODAY!
  • Keep an eye out for taste testing and cookbook pre-orders.
