1. Allen Neighborhood Center has an Americorps position open for a Gardening Educator.
This position collaborates with the GardenHouse Director to develop and promote a robust gardening program throughout the Eastside (link neighbors to resources, assist with planning, promoting, and facilitating of garden education offerings including home garden visits, workshops, and Urban Gardener Certification Program). Collaborate with Youth Programs Coordinator to develop, promote, and facilitate youth programing as well as provide guide-by-the-side instruction/mentoring to GardenHouse volunteers and visitors during GardenHouse open hours. 3. Allen Market Place's Food and Farming Workshop Series
Our July-November Schedule of Food and Farming Workshops is available for the asking. These free workshops are broken into two types:
Flash Trainings: Wednesdays, from 1-1:30 PM, 20-30 minute "flash trainings" will provide a quick and focused look at a single topic, conveniently timed to coincide with the Allen Street Farmers Market and farmer's busy-ness at this time of year.
Regular Workshops: Fridays from 1 - 3 PM, more conventional workshops covering a range of topics around improving food safety and business practices for farmers, food producers, or those interested in starting new food businesses.

5. Become a Market Walker (Or just a Walker)!
Another fantastic Market Walk season is upon us at the Allen Street Farmer’s Market. Throughout the Market season, participants can accumulate mileage and redeem them at the weekly Allen Street Farmer’s Market for tokens to be used for purchasing produce from farmers or vendors. Staffed walking sessions will take place twice a week at Hunter Park, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 5:30-7:30 pm. If you are interested in participating this year, please stop by the Outreach Table on Wednesdays from 2:30-7:00 p.m. at the Allen Street Farmer’s Market to register for this season or just come to the park during one of the sessions. 7. Fruit Tree Project
Help us map Eastside fruit trees to minimize fruit going to waste!
Fruit Tree Project enables youth to learn fruit tree identification, mapping, planting, sustainable agriculture practices, harvesting techniques, culinary skills, and safe food handling.
Neighbors can register their fruit tree(s) to participate in the project (register here). When it is time to harvest, youth and volunteers will set out to harvest the fruit, and the fruit bounty will be divided into thirds between:
1) neighbor(s) who own or live near the tree
2) Allen Neighborhood Center’s weekly food pantry, Bread Basket
3) Youth Service Corps program to further youth members’ culinary skills development by utilizing the fruit in healthy snack recipes, and sold at their Park Cart concession.

10. Permaculture Design Certificate Course
Now enrolling! This two week intensive 72-hour course will be held August 11-23, 2014.
The Hunter Park GardenHouse is excited to partner with Yard to Table Gardens to host another session of the internationally recognized Permaculture Design Certificate Course this summer! We have more options for registration this year, and more outings to great projects in MI. There are several payment options to expand access to Permaculture training. - Permaculture Course base rate- registrants pay $575 for 72-hour course and materials.

12. Host Families Needed for Otsu, Japan Delegation
This is an urgent request for those who would enjoy hosting our Goodwill visitors from Japan. The delegation from Shiga,Japan will arrive on August 21, 2014. We are in dire need of Host Families from the 21st - through August 27. We do not have hosts for ten delegates from our sister city, Otsu.
Hosting a person from another country is an unforgettable experience. Hosting means sharing your culture and hospitality . When you spend time with people from other countries, your whole world expands. If you have children in the home, they learn about the global nature of our community and our world.
Please consider hosting one or two people in your home. Established in 1968, the Michigan-Shiga partnership is the oldest and most comprehensive sister state relationship between the United States and Japan. Residents of Michigan and Shiga continue to maintain close ties through exchanges involving students, teachers, community members and government officials.

17. Parks 5-Year Master Plan
The City of Lansing Parks and Recreation Department and Lansing Park Board will be holding public meetings for the purpose of considering goals for the 2015-2020 Parks 5-Year Master Plan. These meetings will focus on receiving public input on each goal of the plan. Meetings are held at 6 p.m. at Foster Community Center, 200 N. Foster, Room 211 the second Wednesday of each month prior to the regular Park Board meeting. All interested persons are invited to attend this public hearing or submit written comments to Lansing Parks and Recreation, Attn: Parks Director, 200 N. Foster Avenue, Lansing, Michigan 48912.

ITEC's 2020 Girls Camps are now being held during the summer at Foster Community Center.
2020 Girls is a week long STEM day camp geared toward girls ages 9-13. Campers will get to build their own robots, direct their own movies and design their own apps and video games!

19. Garden Project Annual Community Garden Tour

Bus, Bike, or Walk! The tour is a choose your own adventure-style, as we offer a walk, bike, or bus ride (courtesy of Dean Transportations) through our network of gardens in the Lansing area. Choose the multi-modal transportation option that best suits you and your interest. Each tour will visit gardens in neighborhoods, on school grounds, tucked in apartment complexes, and many other surprising locations.
To kick things off, there will be a potluck and snacks at our Foster Park Resource Center (2401 Marcus St.), as well as a welcome from local organizations and partners. Show off your cooking skills by bringing a dish to pass or simply show up for a fun evening.
Tours will be leaving from the Resource Center by 6:00pm and returning around 8:00pm.

The 5th annual Taste of Downtown returns to the 100 block of S. Washington Square. Attendees will enjoy a summer afternoon filled with food sampling, wine sampling from over 100 different wines from around the world, and live music on an outdoor stage!

25. Lansing City Clerk Announce Weekend Hours & Opens South Washington Office to Accept Primary Election Absentee Ballots
If your vacation or work plans take you out of town on Tuesday, August 5, Primary Election Day, add one more item to your travel to do list and make sure that your voice is heard by voting absentee. To make absentee voting easier, Lansing City Clerk Chris Swope has again opened the South Washington Office Complex Election Center to allow one-stop absentee voting until 4 p.m. the day before the election. Please remember to bring approved picture identification to expedite the process.
With free parking and located on CATA route #2, the South Washington Office Complex Election Center, located at 2500 S. Washington and whose most convenient entrance is in the back of the building, is open Monday thru Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with extended hours on the following dates and times:
Sunday, July 27 Noon – 4:00 p.m.
Saturday, August 2 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Tuesday, August 5 6 a.m. – 8 p.m. (Drop off completed ballots only)
City of Lansing voters can also come to the City Clerk’s Office on the 9th floor of City Hall during regular business hours to complete the absentee voter application and ballots, too.
Another option is to call the Lansing City Clerk’s Office at 517-483-4131 to have an absentee application mailed or download the form atwww.lansingmi.gov/Elections. Applications need to be completed, signed and returned in order to receive a ballot.
Also available at www.lansingmi.gov/Elections are useful links to resources that can help voters make informed decisions and confirm voter information. Voters can preview and print their individual ballots, links to ballot proposal like the CATA and Capital Area District Library millage renewal information, and confirm voter registration and polling location
“My goal is to make the voting process as easy and quick as possible,” said Lansing City Clerk Chris Swope. “By having two locations, weekend hours, and resources on the web, I try to eliminate as many hurdles as allowed by Michigan law to make our elections more accessible.”

This award-winning, thought-provoking and homegrown documentary was 12 years in the making. Grace Lee Boggs is a 99-year-old Chinese American woman from Detroit whose vision of revolution will surprise you. A writer, activist, and philosopher rooted for more than 70 years in the African American movement, she has devoted her life to an evolving revolution that encompasses the contradictions of America's past and its potentially radical future. Boggs was inducted into the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame in 2009.

27. Opportunity to Participate in a Research Study of Medicaid Expansion in Michigan
On April 1st, the State of Michigan implemented a state-wide Medicaid Expansion, called the Healthy Michigan Plan (HMP). We are conducting a research study exploring peoples’ experiences and perceptions with accessing health care, to help inform how this expansion is being implemented. The study is being conducted under the supervision of Dr. Linda Hunt, of the Department of Anthropology at Michigan State University, in collaboration with the Michigan Department of Community Health.
We are seeking volunteers over age 18 to participate in hour-long interviews to discuss the HMP Medicaid Expansion, and how it might impact access to healthcare. You do not need to have any previous knowledge about Medicaid or HMP to participate. As a token of our appreciation for your participation, we will provide you a $25 gift card to a local grocery store. Summer Art Camp students will learn and experience creativity in the professional setting of Lansing Art Gallery. Young artists will explore creative processes, techniques and materials with the guidance of trained artists. Each series of classes will culminate in a student art show in Lansing Art Gallery's Student Gallery! Excitement for Reading Abounds at Fenner Nature Center
Fenner Nature Center is offering a FREE Nature Story Hour for children between the ages of 4 and 6 on the first Saturday of each month! 31. Adopt-a-Park
As part of the Parks and Recreation city mission, promoting community leisure gives the department the ability to “enhance the quality of life through preservation of maintenance and parklands.” The adopt-a-park program supports this mission by giving Lansing the opportunity to become involved with the growth of city parks and neighborhoods. Creating community begins with initiative and contribution from citizens who understand the importance of natural care and development.
By encouraging and utilizing volunteers to show community pride we hope to have cleaner, safer, and greater used parks. We want neighborhood organizations, families, Boy and Girl Scout groups, and even businesses to be participants in the city wide program.
The City of Lansing’s Adopt-A-Park program aims to unite, support, and educate all people interested in preserving and maintaining our beautiful park system.
This volunteer program provides opportunities for volunteer groups to assist park staff and help keep Lansing’s parks and public areas safe, clean, and attractive. Under the supervision of the Adopt-A-Park Coordinator, volunteer groups “adopt” a park, or a portion of a park, and agree to complete certain service projects during one year. 34. CAHA announces Cooking from the Pantry
We are pleased to announce the roll out of Cooking from the Pantry. Many families find it challenging to create healthy meals on a tight budget. This cookbook is intended to help people make the most out of foods that can be found at a local food pantry. These recipes and food tips have been compiled with help from the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, Mid-Michigan District Health Department, and MSU Extension. The Cooking from the Pantry Cookbook was produced by the Capital Area Health Alliance through the Michigan Health and Wellness 4 x 4 Grant as well as the generous printing donation of ASAP.

Capoeira is a martial art created by slaves in the state of Bahia, Brazil during the colonial period and was disguised as a dance to avoid detection by their colonial masters. It is a lively aerobic art which incorporates live music and singing. Classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays 6-8pm at Pilgrim Church 125 S. Pennsylvania in Lansing, MI. Class fees are $40/month or $10 drop-in fee per class. The first class is free! Classes are also held on MSU campus, but location and times vary by semester.
