12. Foster Park, Eagle Scout Project, June 19th
As many of you know I am doing my Eagle Scout Project at Foster Park in Lansing, Michigan. The park has been neglected for some time and is dilapidated. I am trying to breathe new life into its more damaged areas. The playground is unsafe and in desperate need of new mulch. The slides are cracked and the swing are missing proper pads. The picnic tables, benches, and  backstop, are in need of paint. Attached are some before pictures and some pictures from my first work day. Below is a list of the materials for which I am seeking donations.

If you can find it in your heart of hearts to make a donation to my cause, I would be extremely grateful. Donations of all amounts are appreciated. Having the friends, family, and community support this work means a lot to me.

All donations are tax deductible and should be made payable to the Allen Neighborhood Center with the words Chris' Eagle Scout Project in the memo. You can send the donation directly to ANC at 1619 East Kalamazoo Street, Lansing Michigan 48912. If donations exceed my needs, any excess funds will be donated to the Allen Neighborhood Center.

13. Peace Education Center Hosts Insurgent Theatre’s Production of Daring, Original play, BEHIND THE BADGE
The Peace Education Center welcomes back to mid-Michigan the radical troupe, Insurgent Theatre, from Columbus, Ohio, for a one-night-only performance of its daring original play BEHIND THE BADGE.  The performance will be on Thursday, June 19, 2014, at 7 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 855 Grove Street, East Lansing, Michigan.  The event is free and open to the public.

What does it mean to be a compassionate, dedicated, humane police officer in a country with the world's highest incarceration rate and a continuing tradition of racial injustice?  Insurgent Theatre brings audiences behind the badge of a neighborhood liaison officer, using stripped down, interactive and a radical analysis to peer into the inner life of a man in blue.

Insurgent Theatre strives to connect performing arts with radical struggles to make theatre that is relevant, engaging, challenging, and useful for those who confront the U.S. police state and global capitalist empire.  The troupe was founded in 2003 and has toured the country since 2008.  Lansing-area audiences enjoyed the company’s earlier highly charged, energetic productions, IN THE BELLY (2011) and ULYSSES’ CREWMAN (2009).

BEHIND THE BADGE was written by Ben Turk, who also plays the lead character.  The production is directed by Kate Pleuss.  A community discussion with Turk and Pleuss about prison conditions will immediately follow the play.  Donations for the production will be accepted with half of all funds raised supporting prisoner resistance.

“Insurgent Theatre brings a unique, intimate, and challenging experience to the audience,” said Tom Rico, co-chair of the Peace Education Center.  “The previous two productions were unforgettable and we anticipate that BEHIND THE BADGE will be no different.”

Further information from Insurgent Theatre about BEHIND THE BADGE can be found at insurgenttheatre.org.  Event information is available from the Peace Education Center at http://www.peaceedcenter.org/ or by phone at 517-515-5634.

25. Summer Crime Prevention Tips
Prevent bicycle and lawnmower theft by locking your bike to a stationary object.  The best lock is a hardened steel u-lock.  Make sure both wheels are locked and remove any accessories that can be easily taken.  Keep you mower in a locked garage or shed.  Record the model and serial numbers, and descriptions of your bikes and lawnmowers.

Don’t relax your home and yard security during the summer.  If you are working in the yard, lock your house and garage.  Learn how to “pin” your windows, which will prevent a burglar from forcing them open any further. Trim hedges to 3 feet for less. Use motion detector lighting at home entrances.  When going on vacation contact the Lansing Police at 483-7665 to arrange for a Vacation House Check.

Operation Identification is a nationally recognized citizens’ burglary prevention program in use for over 30 years.  The program marks your property with an id, inventories property and helps police identify and return stolen property.  For more information conact Officer Elton at 517 483 6812 to get your Operation Identification decal.

Help Protect our Kids by observing Lansing Curfew hours.  Curfew hours for children 12 and under: 10 pm – 6 am, 13 – 16 years old: Midnight – 6 am.  During curfew hours those under 17 may not be on any public street, highway, alley, park, vacant lot or other public place.  The curfew law helps reduce children becoming victims of crime, in addition to limiting the accessibility of children to commit crimes. Call 911 to report any youth disturbances after curfew.

26. Van Atta’s Garden Tips for June

  • Use a wheeled trash container to store potting soil. This keeps the soil dry and makes it easy to move where needed.
  • Use a clear 2 liter bottle with both ends cut off as a shield against string trimming or lawn mowing damage on your young trees. After cutting off both ends, split the side of the remaining cylinder so you can easily fit it around the trunk. It will be barely noticeable, but be sure to remove as your tree grows.
  • Try using a large shepherds hook as a tomato stake, then use the hook to hang a flowering basket.
  • Use bee and ant guards on your hummingbird feeders to keep your feeder strictly for the birds, and hang your hummingbird feeder in a shady area to prevent fermentation and algae.
  • Considering how terrible mosquitoes seem to be this year, here's a few more tips to help: apparently mosquitoes aren't as attracted to yellow lights as a normal incandescent bulbs, so try replacing your deck or porch lights with the yellow "bug lights". Use a water wiggler in your birdbath. These little mechanisms wiggle the water so larvae can't survive, and the movement attracts birds, too. If you want to spend time outside without spraying, set up a fan or two in the area you want to relax. Mosquitoes are weak, so they'll have more trouble reaching you if it's "windy".
  • It's time to consider beginning your treatment with fungicide for plants that usually suffer. Preventative treatment for powdery mildew, black spot and rust is much easier than trying to get control in July
  • Berry Tea  (Makes 2.5 quarts)
    4 individual tea bags
    4 c boiling water
1 can frozen cranberry-raspberry juice concentrate, thawed
    4 c cold water
    Fresh mint
Place teabags in heat-proof container and add boiling water. Cover and steep for 5 minutes. Remove and discard tea bags, refrigerate tea. Just before serving, combine cranberry-raspberry concentrate and cold water in large pitcher, stir in tea. Serve over ice, garnish with mint.
