HEALTH / WELLNESS
CAHA announces Cooking from the Pantry
We are pleased to announce the roll out of Cooking from the Pantry. Many families find it challenging to create healthy meals on a tight budget. This cookbook is intended to help people make the most out of foods that can be found at a local food pantry. These recipes and food tips have been compiled with help from the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, Mid-Michigan District Health Department, and MSU Extension. The Cooking from the Pantry Cookbook was produced by the Capital Area Health Alliance through the Michigan Health and Wellness 4 x 4 Grant as well as the generous printing donation of ASAP.
The cookbook is available on the Alliance website at
www.choosinghealth-caha.org/pantry_cookbook.php. Hard copies are also available. Please contact us at
517-347-3377 if you are interested in distributing some cookbooks to your constituents.

Health Foods for All Project
The “Healthy Foods for All” project consists of outreach and engagement in targeted food desert neighborhoods with the goal of increasing access to healthy foods. Our target areas include traditionally under-served neighborhoods with no grocery store. They typically have higher percentages of low and very low income people and racial and ethnic minorities than city averages; and high incidences of diseases that result from poor nutrition.
We received a grant from the Mid-Michigan Program for Greater Sustainability Community Reinvestment fund to support this work. We are looking for a few interested people to work with us and learn with us about creating solutions.
We meet on the third Tuesday of each month at the Allen Neighborhood Center, 1619 East Kalamazoo Street, Lansing.
If you are interested in joining us please contact me via email or phone as noted below. Thank you for considering.

Ingham Pathways to Better Health
Ingham Pathways to Better Health is a new program that is free to those who qualify. We can help you:
• Get access to the community services that you need
• Get linked up with primary care and preventive health care services
• Reduce unneeded hospitalizations and emergency room visits
How it works:
A Community Health Worker will meet with you in your home to identify the health and social services that you may need to improve your health. The Community Health Worker will help you set health goals and provide support to help you meet these goals. This may include help in managing your health conditions, as well as other things that affect your health, like food, housing or transportation assistance.
In order to receive services, you must:
• Be qualified for Medicaid, Medicare, or Adult Benefit Waiver (Ingham Health Plan A). This means you are either on one of these plans or are eligible for one
• Have 2 or more “chronic” health conditions. This means an illness or disease that does not go away easily, like diabetes, depression, long-term pain, or others
• Want to improve your health so that you do not need to use hospital services (like the emergency room) so often
• Be 18 years or older
• Live in Ingham County

COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS
Summer Crime Prevention Tips
Prevent bicycle and lawnmower theft by locking your bike to a stationary object. The best lock is a hardened steel u-lock. Make sure both wheels are locked and remove any accessories that can be easily taken. Keep you mower in a locked garage or shed. Record the model and serial numbers, and descriptions of your bikes and lawnmowers.
Don’t relax your home and yard security during the summer. If you are working in the yard, lock your house and garage. Learn how to “pin” your windows, which will prevent a burglar from forcing them open any further. Trim hedges to 3 feet for less. Use motion detector lighting at home entrances. When going on vacation contact the Lansing Police at 483-7665 to arrange for a Vacation House Check.
Operation Identification is a nationally recognized citizens’ burglary prevention program in use for over 30 years. The program marks your property with an id, inventories property and helps police identify and return stolen property. For more information contact Officer Elton at
517 483 6812 to get your Operation Identification decal.
Help Protect our Kids by observing Lansing Curfew hours. Curfew hours for children 12 and under: 10 pm – 6 am, 13 – 16 years old: Midnight – 6 am. During curfew hours those under 17 may not be on any public street, highway, alley, park, vacant lot or other public place. The curfew law helps reduce children becoming victims of crime, in addition to limiting the accessibility of children to commit crimes. Call 911 to report any youth disturbances after curfew.
We’re making a Just B Yoga cookbook!
Just B Yoga is a community being built one bite at a time.
Healthy, fresh food should be affordable and accessible, just as we believe about yoga. Because food is yoga. Nothing creates connection for people more than food. Whole foods create whole-body health and wholesome connections.
Food can plant the seed for positive community growth. Imagine more time talking with each other, sharing and laughing whether in the garden, in the kitchen or at the dinner table.
Mindful. Present.
The Just B Yoga community has grown, cooked and shared on shoestring budgets. Now we want to share with you.
Help us build and nourish community. How do you do it? What are some of your favorite dishes?

Controlled substances cannot be accepted. Contact your local police or sheriff for disposal options.
Must be an Ingham County resident to participate. Will not accept meds from doctors, dentists, non-residents, etc.
Pill or capsules must be taken out of bottles or blister packs and placed in a ziplock bag. Individual prescriptions do not need to be kept separate; they can all be mixed together in one bag.
Liquids, ointments, creams, and aerosols can be left in the original container, but all personal information must be blacked out.
Latex Paint Disposal
Latex paint can be thrown in the regular trash, but it must be solid. To solidify latex paint you must:
• Remove the lid
• Add enough cat litter to the paint to absorb all of the liquid.
• Make sure the cat litter is mixed down to the bottom of the can.
• Leave the lid off, place the paint can in a sunny location, out of the reach of children & pets and let it sit until it hardens.
• Once the paint/cat litter mixture is hard, it can be thrown in the trash.
• If you have a full can of paint, take a box and line it with a trash bag. Solidify the paint with cat litter in the box and toss it in the trash once it has hardened.
This program is NOT open to businesses, government agencies, churches, schools, or non-profit organizations.

Arts Council of Greater Lansing Offers Chris Clark Fellowship Application Opportunities
The Chris Clark Fellowship Program for Creative Professionals was established through a legacy gift from Lansing area native, Chris Clark, to the Arts Council of Greater Lansing. The goal of the program is to support creative capacity building for individuals such as visual, literary, and performing artists; arts administrators; arts educators; and arts students in greater Lansing. The Fellowship provides access to professional development opportunities and business resources through a competitive cash grant reimbursement of up to $1,500.
"The Chris Clark Fellowship Program provides an excellent opportunity for area creatives to bolster their work," says Debbie Mikula, Arts Council executive director. Lead Safe Lansing
The Lead Safe Lansing Program wants to help make your home lead-safe for your child. They utilize funds made available through the Department of Housing & Urban Development to sponsor a lead remediation program to make housing units lead safe for both owner-occupied and rental units within the city limits. Up to $8,000 is available as a loan for the lead remediation and after three years, the loan will be forgiven. Lead remediation items installed in your home could include, new windows and doors, fresh paint, aluminum trim, porch floor enclosure, and vinyl siding.
Some facts about lead. If your home was built before 1978, it could contain lead-based paint. According to HUD, 24 million homes in the U.S have peeling or chipping lead-based paint or high levels of lead dust. The older your home, the greater the chances of having a lead-based paint hazard. Lead-based paint can be found in, windows, siding, soil, porch floors, railings, doors, and ceilings. Lead dust can also cause problems, especially for young children and babies.
