Colleagues,

Attached is a proposal to raise dues by $5 steps each national
convention to catch up to inflation gradually rather than all at once.
The first step would not be at the 2026 convention; it would be after
the 2028 convention.

in relevant part:
4.4.a. During the prior 12 months have donated, or have had donated on
their behalf, an amount of at least [[$25]] [the sum of $5 for each
Regular Convention (as defined in Article 10, Section 1) adjourned sine
die between January 1, 2018 and 12 months ago]; or

Proviso: This bylaw will take effect on January 1, 2028.

This fails the "make it less ambiguous" test.

I don't see what is ambiguous about this.

However, I am certainly open to alternative language. This is just a
starting point.

Thank you Dr. Moulton. I'm going to check with staff about this particular implementation this week to get some feedback.

Colleagues,

I am attaching alternative language for the committee to consider --
perhaps as a substitute. This uses calendar years rather than
conventions for the step ups.

In relevant part:
During the prior 12 months have donated, or have had donated on their
behalf, an amount of at least [[$25]] [$5 for every two calendar years
elapsed between January 1, 2017 and 12 months ago]; or

Proviso: This bylaw will take effect on January 1, 2027.

Colleagues,

The attached language is another alternative, which may be even simpler.

Apologies for my lack of participation last meeting, I was out of it due to having had to work during the night shift when the time switch occurred, and I just couldn't really get engaged when I also wasn't voting on anything

In response to this proposal this is kinda where my head is at right now

1. To hard code this in means changing the bylaws (something we haven’t done in years so who knows when it can stop)
2. Any gains are going to get messed with by the credit card processors, you’ll have to basically remove the auto-renew option, or spend a bunch of effort informing of the price change and updating everyone on auto-renew and then eventually they’ll see they’re getting charged more than they initially authorized and you’ll get people filing refunds.

If you want to offer a better solution: amend the standard convention business to include a dues vote right after credentials and everything, first order of real business. Make it so that it’s a yes or no majority vote for a $10 increase or amendable to any amount less than $10. So business will be “shall dues increase by $10/year” someone amends and says “no let’s do $5”, vote happens on amendment, vote happens on yes or no to the 5, majority rules, move on. I’m sure it’ll still take more time than it should, but it does make increasing a lower threshold than amending the bylaws and doesn’t lock in a permanent increase in dues until it prices a ton of people out.

Question (and please ask staff if this is workable): Could a member on auto-pay (not auto-renew) for dues have at least the old amount charged, and then receive a notice of a deficiency if there has been a dues increase (with an option to adjust the auto-pay to the new amount)?

Rob,

Yes charging the old amount and sending a notification of the deficiency is possible. It is also possible to send a notice before the charge, in case they want to do it in advance.

In the past, the LNC would send a seven message series of messages around renewals.
