Subject: September Membership Report

Please find attached the September Membership Report.

The significant drop off in memberships is multi-faceted and I have elaborated below.

Over the last month staff has been working on cleaning up imported contact records and eliminating duplicate contact records. Over 6000 duplicate records were matched and eliminated just in October. While this is good for the health and future viability of our data, it did account for ~200 memberships attached to duplicate contacts being counted in the August report (the entirety of the 1.42% “increase”). We will not see the full effect of the data cleanup and duplicate removal until the October report but I expect it to be significant.

In real terms, we had -3.62% membership loss over the last two months.

As indicated last month, the “Other” category is outsized due to the roll out of the membership module. These individuals are qualified members that do in fact live in one of our 50 states, but the system is unable to “assign” them their state for the purposes of reporting. Staff is working to correct that, but membership totals by state will not reflect accurately until this is complete.

These system-driven percentage impacts mean little when assessing our strategy, messaging, or decisions. What I don’t want to get lost in the technical weeds is that we have had a serious and sustained decline in membership. Presidential years have historically had a very positive effect on membership and financial growth, reaching new people and bringing them into the party through messaging. 2016 brought in 7,958 and 2020 brought in 4,176 new members. We have not received a similar bump this year. We lost 140 members in the first five months of 2024, but have lost 743 members in the 4 months since convention. The top two cited reasons for cancellations are dissatisfaction with our presidential ticket, followed by leaving/taking a break from politics. Together these make up more than three quarters of our cancellations. Financial hardship accounts for approximately 1/5th.
