KPN Research has a number of job openings for senior researchers in the following areas to set up a
new project on service enabling on future broadband networks:
- Database Technology (Multimedia, Web-enabling, and Distribution)
- Distributed Computing Platforms
- Telecommunication Service Management, Billing and Accounting
- Security
Candidates should have a PhD in computer science. A PhD in electrical engineering, mathematics, or
physics is an option as well, as long as there is a substantial computer science component in the
research. Experience in an industrial research environment is considered to be an advantage.
The new project will focus on the development of methods, techniques and tools for a generic software
platform layer on top of future broadband networks for the development of broadband services. Four
research areas will be addressed: QoS in distributed computing platforms, multi-media storage and
retrieval, security, and billing & accounting.
The overall technical approach is one of 'learning by doing'. Apart from the conceptual work on
service architecture and design there will be implementation work on an experimentation platform that
is central to the project. As far as implementation is concerned the overall approach is to build on of-
the-shelf components offered by the ICT industry. So, if there are components available that satisfy our
needs we will buy them. If there are no such components, we will try to have them developed by (or
developed them jointly with) suitable partners from the ICT industry.
The project will be located at a new KPN Research site at the campus of the University of Twente. The
research will be carried out in close co-operation with the Telematics Institute (which includes several
universities in the Netherlands) as well as with other industrial R&D labs in the Twente area (like for
example Lucent and Ericsson).
KPN Research employs around 450 researchers in the areas of network technology and information
technology. It has offices in Leidschendam, Groningen and Twente. KPN Research is the R&D facility
of KPN. KPN is a private company that originated from the former Dutch PTT. It is a mid-size
European telecom operator with strong international co-operations. KPN is very active in new areas
such as IP networks (together with QWest) and Internet Service Provisioning.
