Well, those of us who didn't take the day trip last weekend missed an
awesome list of 61 birds for the day including a Virginia Rail!!!
They were also treated to a terrific Peregrine flying display, a
sandhill crane, great egrets, and lots of ducks! You just never know
what will be out there waiting to be seen.
You have another chance to do some late migration birding on Sunday,
November 8 with Dan Donaldson and Ann Bugeda. The main destination is
Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge in the western basin of Lake Erie.
The refuge is open for a driving tour once a month and it's the
easiest way to see the bulk of the refuge. Ducks, geese, and swans
are likely sightings at this time of year. The could be stops at
other areas areas that are reporting interesting birds depending on
time. There are still openings left for this trip and you can register
by calling
800-669-9226 or on-line at:
http://reservations.lakemetroparks.com/programs/9395/
Cost of the trip is $40 and includes the usual ration of chocolate!!
I hope by now you have your copy of the winter Parks Plus.
Registration is open for all trips at this point and the birding
programs are listed on page 7. I'm looking forward to the Gulls and
Ducks of Niagara trip and hope some of you will join me and Dan to
enjoy this amazing congregation of birds at one of the wonders of the
world!! You can pick up a copy of Parks Plus at the Penitentiary Glen
Nature Center.
Are your feeders busy? Mine is and I'm enjoying the return of the
juncos. But it has reminded me that I need to get the open water
problem solved now -- last winter my feeder was abandoned during the
coldest weather because there isn't a source of open water in the
neighborhood -- I need to research the options and decide if and what
to do. White-crowned and white-throated sparrows are still in the
area as well as kinglets and some yellow-rumped warblers. I have a
Carolina wren roosting at night in the end of a rolled-up matchstick
shade on my front porch -- need to provide an alternative for her
since that shade has to come down before winter. And then there are
the leaves . . . . so much to do. I hope you are taking the time to
enjoy the fall weather and birds!!!
