It's still worth watching for migrants -- I drove through Cleveland on
Route 2 yesterday late morning and the number of chimney swifts
feeding along the lakeshore downtown was impressive!
The end of October is the end of migration for songbirds and
shorebirds, but just the beginning for waterfowl. The next day trip on
Saturday, October 24, 2009 explores several migration stop-over
locations along the shoreline of Lake Erie west of Cleveland. Previous
fall trips have yielded a variety of species including green-winged
teal, American wigeon, gadwall, and swamp sparrow.
Join Dan Donaldson and Ann Bugeda for a trip to the west side of
Cleveland to look for migrating birds as the waves transition from
songbirds to waterfowl. There will be a stop at Sandy Ridge Park in
Lorain County and other areas that are reporting interesting birds.
There are still 4 openings left for this trip and you can register by

I've just fired my bird feeder for the fall and winter. It's always
delightful how quickly the birds return. A hairy woodpecker female is
back already -- I think she's the same bird that frequently the feeder
last spring -- she seems to have a section of permanently ruffled
feathers in the center of her back. And there has been an explosion
of robins in the yard -- they are after the little crab apples up
front, but enjoying bathing in my little pond, too. Soon there will
be juncos!!!
Don't forget this Saturday's Bird Walk at the Glen -- 10/17 from 8 to
9:30 a.m. with Pat Morse!
