It's time to quit putting off learning bird songs! With the leaf
cover so far advanced this spring (it looks like the end of May to
me), bird song may be the best clue we have during migration to a
bird's presence. Take that white-eyed vireo that was lurking in my
yard all day Monday -- I never did clap my eyes on it, but I heard it
off and on from dawn to dusk.

If you don't own any song tapes or CD's to prime your ears, we'll be
distributing them as part of the CELEBRATING BIRDS program at Chagrin
River Park this Saturday, May 8!

The day will begin with a 7 a.m. BIRD WALK to catch the dawn singing!
This past Sunday evening, I found sora, a pair of kestrals, solitary
sandpipers, a female harrier, and a pair of red-tailed hawks in about
30 minutes. If you've never walked at this park, the morning
activities will be a good introduction.

Small group walks will begin at 8 a.m. A naturalist volunteer will
guide you through one of the most bird friendly areas of the park to
look for birds and visit several interpretive stations manned by the
field naturalists. We'll share information about local impacts on
migrating birds such as habitat fragmentation, urban light pollution,
the impacts of over-browsing by deer, and wind turbines located in
migratory corridors.

The small group walks will end at the BIG SIT on top of the sledding
hill where you'll have a chance to contribute to the day's list of
birds and pick up your choice of a Bird Song CD from Ohio's Dept. of
Natural Resources.

At 9:30 a.m., a member of Lake County's Master Gardeners will present
a program on "Plants that Attract Birds & Butterflies" in the picnic
shelter. Two of the resident raptors from Lake Metroparks Wildlife
Center will be on display as well.

We'll also be giving away the 2010 poster created by the International
Migratory Bird Day organizers (limited supply, so one per family
please).

Other birding events in the next week or so include:
WEEKDAY BIRD WALKS, Lake Shore Reservation in Perry on Wednesday
morning, 5/5 and at Penitentiary Glen Reservation in Kirtland on 5/12,
both at 7:30 a.m., Free
