Good morning, fellow birders!! I'm just back from an early morning
tour of Chagrin River Park in Willoughby. I stepped out of my car at
7:45 a.m. and the first thing I heard was birds singing!! Don't you
just love it as we move through February and the birds being to sing
morning songs? I was there for a little over an hour and the singers
included cardinals, robins, tufted titmice, black-capped chickadees, a
blue jay posing as a hawk, white-breasted nuthatches, and red-bellied
woodpeckers. I also saw a male hairy woodpecker, a white-throated
sparrow, a few juncos, and numerous tree sparrows. Just as I was
leaving, a song sparrow piped up and it was delightful to hear his
warm, cheerful song! Spring is on the way!!

And so is a full schedule of bird walks and day trips!! I want to
share with you an exciting new way to access all the birding programs
at Lake Metroparks on-line! A couple weeks ago, I spent some time
with the webmaster and he created an easy-access link for you. So
here is how to get there in 3 easy steps:
1. Go to lakemetroparks.com and in the "search" box in
the upper right corner, type in the word birding or bird watching and
click on "GO".
2. This will take you to a page with a list of links.
Click on the first link in the list.
3. Scroll down this general information birding page to
a link, "on-line registration". Click on that and WALAA -- there you
are!! A list of programs that are open for registration. Now you can
click on individual programs to read about them and register for
them. If the default end date at the top of this page isn't May 31,
you can redo that and update the list so that it will be complete
through the end of this quarter. Have a week vacation coming up?
Type in those dates and it will narrow the search programs to fit your
preferences.

Lake County residents can register this week for upcoming spring
programs and out-of-county registration opens on Monday, 2/8. Let me
know if you find this new access helpful (e-mail me at
mh...@lakemetroparks.com).

Finally, on Saturday evening, 1/23, a group of folks who came on
birding day trips in 2009 joined us for a potluck supper and reunion
gathering at Penitentiary Glen. It was fun to be together and we
missed those of you who weren't able to join us. If you come along on
any of our day trips this year, you'll be invited to this annual
gathering next January. I'm not sure what the high point of the
evening was -- the great desserts, the doorprizes, or the 3 barred
owls Dan called out for us at the edge of the ravine!

I look forward to seeing you birding out there as we make the
transition from winter to spring!!
