Cycling Friends,
On Wednesday, May 25th League of Michigan Bicyclists, Michigan Trails and Greenways Alliance and MSU Bikes are joining forces once again for the 7th Annual Lucinda Means Bicycle Advocacy Day at the State Capitol, as a culmination to National Bike Month. Whether you enjoy riding on roads, trails or single track, we hope you will join us in advancing the interests of all cyclists in the state.
The issues we are currently advocating for include:
Protect Vulnerable Roadway Users - Enhanced penalties for injuring/killing cyclists
Improve Drivers Education - Add share the road component to curriculum
Revise Right Turn Signal - Make extended right arm legal in Michigan
Support Bikes on Trains - Roll on bike service for Michigan trains
Oppose DNR Acreage Limits - Remove arbitrary cap on acquiring additional parkland
Our past efforts have certainly paid off. With the help of cycling advocates who participated in past Advocacy Days, we were able to pass Complete Streets legislation last year in Michigan which ensures that cyclists will be included in the design of future state road projects. Additionally, we were able to pass both our vulnerable user and drivers education bills out of the House last year – which is the furthest they have been in the legislative process. Unfortunately the Senate failed to take them up.
That’s why need your support on May 25th! We are pleased that we have found new bill sponsors that will help us champion these bills through the legislative process. Two thirds of the Michigan Legislator are new, however, so we need as much help as possible to educate our policy makers about our shared desire to make Michigan a safer state for cycling.
The event is just around the corner, so please register ASAP so we have plenty of time to schedule meetings with everyone’s State Representatives and Senators. If you’ve never “lobbied” before, don’t worry about it – no experience is needed! We’ll walk you through everything!
