Hi Guys,

As per title, I just wanted folks views on paragliding apps?  I will still use my regular vario but will use the app for airspace mapping etc.

I'm not so bothered about any thermal assistant. This is on the basis that I think that UK thermals are often too complex. If regular 'text book thermals then no assist required, I may be wrong here, opinions welcome!?

I downloaded Fly me which looked simple and the side view was attractive but I thought the mapping was rubbish so won't be using it.

XC soar or XC tracker, Paraglider Dashboard, any views on these?

One day I night learn to fly properly, so I thought I would be best to learn and get familiar with an app that would see me through to being half a pilot! So tending towards XC soar or XC tracker.

Many thanks, Seb

XCsoar is a bit tedious to work out at first, but I'll be happy to talk you through it - I think once someone explains what bits of config actually do then it's quite OK to work with.  It has a few small legacy issues from being written as a sailplane app (i.e. wind calc is not reliable at all) but it works well for me.  You can turn off the thermal assistant in it as well - probably the first thing to do IMHO.

I had a brief look at the other ones you mentioned but if I can't work out an app but found them a bit less intuitive in some ways (but to be honest I didn't spend much time on trying them out).

Thank you Przemek. Getting to grips with it sort of. How do I get my pointer to be a paraglider! Is the wind calculation not worth having then? Are there any fields you find particularly useful or not so useful? I think I will mainly use it for dodging airspace. I will not be able to change  anything  once flying  due to gloves so will be set up on that basis.

Hi Seb.
I used XC soar on android but not having a barometer meant it wasnt any good for vario or keeping out of airspace(no baro altitude). The Kobo has XC soar and works fine. Wind speed not always accurate but at least it pipes up when there is a big change in speed or direction. The thermal assist on android is colour so much better than the Kobo. It does work. And is pretty innofensive in the corner. The airspace maps work well but you need to touch screen to zoom in and out. Or just wait for the airspace  vicinity alarm.
I would love to use a tablet/phone instead of kobo but battery life and no barometer means I'd have to have a vario as well as a second power source. If you find one with a Baro then I'd pro go with that. El cheapo colour tablet would be awesome, you can glue a button on your glove that works the capacative screen.
Cheers  Steve

Yeah, I got one screen I'm flying with, autozoom when thermalling (shows you the drift) and you don't need anything else really.  Here's the photo of my setup (although I think I've altered one field recently).  Anyway, I can talk you through it on Sat & Sun!

BTW, you may need to tick "expert" box to see all the config options like pointer style (paraglider, plane, simple) and others.

With xcsoar on my phone, for usability with gloves I have a short stylus attached to my flight deck.
Also,  I set my phone screen to greyscale, and turn off the terrain so that only airspace and roads show.
