Welcome from the chair
Minutes from last years AGM were approved. No comments made.
Ben encouraged members to continue to submit ideas for funding and added, the LLSC will require a detailed proposal for any ideas.
Ben would like to encourage more members to help with the club
Ben outlined Graham’s triangle project.
Strathenry Cup
15k triangle
Takeoff from any of the Lomond hills
Winner gets a hand made trophy and maybe a bottle
Details on request
Graham to finalise details
Approved as an LLSC competition but many pilots who fly Bishop are not LLSC members so it may be better to make it an SHPF comp.
Ben asked to speak to each committee member and present any updates they may have and include if each committee member is happy to stay on the committee?
Ben asked if anyone would like to join the committee? No responses.
Ben included the LLSC committee a Secretary.
Accounts (Ian)
Happy to continue
8K in the day to day LLSC club account
Ian detailed the forestry account is separate with more funds and this can be used to support approved funding requests.
Ian asked to approve the accounts. Approved
Ian added we have less members this year (50 ish) but he has notified the shortages so we may see membership equal the previous year (80 ish).
Forestry (Alastair)
Alastair detailed the forestry is being replanted
On the anniversary of planting assessments of damage from weather, deer etc are carried out.
Stalkers reported damage to fencing and livestock has been able to access planting areas.
Alastair suggested the only way to prevent this minor damage is to install deer fences. However due to the expense of fences, Alastair suggested we continue with a small loss through deer damage.
Alastair reported a healthy 182k in the forestry account. Some of this money will be required for maintenance over the next 4-5 years but the balance is not likely to change.
Alastair included we do spend money so we can get VAT back which is a handy source of income.
Angus asked what the frequency of activity is?
Alastair advised the aim was a 10 year cycle to boost funds every 10 years but that may turn into 7 or 8 years.
Mark asked if the deer were ours? Good idea for the BBQ!
Alastair replied he was only interested in the control of deer.
Mike asked about the long term plans and why does the LLSC have to hang on to some much cash?
Mike asked why we don't buy the land on Tinto which we take off from?
Alastair replied saying it's a big topic but land is very expensive at the moment and we do not require the land to fly it as we have access rights.
Mike added, the LLSC should think long and hard what we all would like to do with all that money.
Alastair added we should give more to the BHPA sites fund and admitted he knew this wasn’t universally favored
Mike added he would not support this.
Ben added that the committee always discuss any ideas which are submitted and welcomed Mike onto the committee who had previously agreed to come onto the committee.
Ben added that with Mike onboard, he could help shape what we do with the forestry money as part of the LLSC committee.
Angus added that buying land would be the only way to future proof it for free flight as otherwise, developers could build turbines or plant trees where we want to launch.
Fred joined in and added that Tinto is a site of scientific interest and any turbines are likely to be built in front of the hill rather than on the hill. So owning a part of the hill would not stop development.
Fred agreed with Mike that the money being in the bank isn’t doing any good but we needed good ideas to put it to good use and not waste it.
Chris added, we have already returned a lot of money to the sites fund and we should consider to continue to do so. We should continue to consider proposals which come in from members or others wishing to make suggestions for funding under the agreement they will see the project through.
Chris added there would be merit in owning some of the hill to protect against planting which Chris has seen on other border hills.
Airspace update (Alastair)
Edinburgh LOA is due for renewal
ATC happy with the new LOA
Members are reminded to continue be careful with the LOA procedure.
Alastair has requested the LOA becomes publicly available but not on the table from ATC
Drones threaten borders sites but discussion may lead to operation being restricted to am only which should not affect us.
TDA for trials not allowed as permanent feature
Long drawn out process of airspace changes
Gap should form between Glasgow and Edinburgh airspace but it will be a very long term project.
Chief coach (Fred)
Not much to report, business as usual.
Continue to speak to new members
BHPA Exams
Thinking of re-introducing Pilot day in January.
Only 2 people this winter so no point in doing a pilot day.
Fred just doing the pilot days
Helping Kevin with wind farms and drones
Happy to stay on as Chief Coach
Anyone can help Fred in his roll or take his title and Fred will help them.
Bhpa require coach course
Spaces available in peaks for coach refresher course
Mark, at the SHPF is planning to run club coach course
Chris - organising a first aid course with subsidised by the LLSC
Fred - To ask Mark S BHPA if we can make coach course with refresher one day
Angus - not possible to make it 2 day course
Safety (Chris)
Nothing to report
Chris reminded members currency is going to be low
Spring coming and to use caution for first flights.
Annual successful repack ratho
Small local repack days available on request
LLSC first aid course with waiting list
Instructors and tandems required to do first aid course now
Its likely, first aid courses will be an annual event
Open courses for first aid if required
Happy to continue as Safety officer
Also happy If others would like to take over.
Website (Mark apologies)
Mark could not make it
Mark did agree to continue via email previously to the AGM
Sites & airspace (Kevin)
Hulfly temperature & humidity sensors going ahead at existing talkers
Camera ongoing with discussion to more advanced IT support due to remote location and low signal and low DC power
Wind farm plans continue with discussion ongoing to put our case across
Reduction in numbers of turbines, in planned sites 70 to 37
Drones discussions ongoing
In contact with caa about drones
Glasgow airspace changes giving more room for us to fly
CAMP encourage folk to raise them for all possible site options
Angus - bhpa encouraging caa to make changes to conspicuity to allow mobile phones to be used to be seen rather than flarm devices
Legal in the EU but not yet in UK
CAA insist ADSB answer to traffic separation.
Angus added that due to brexit, electronic conspicuity could now be done with mobile phones via an app but not yet approved in the UK.
Fred added that some instruments are very much like big phones with dedicated set up for flying
Ben added some GA aircraft have the capability to see flarm devices in their aircraft.
SHPF rep Ian Wallace - apologies
PPG Bruce - apologies
Club night director - Mike said he could help but didn’t want to do the roll. Will ask Simon who couldn’t attend AGM
Committee member (David) - apologies
Welcome Mike J to the committee
Welcome Mike Armstron HG officer
Mike informed us the hangies are planning a comp 9-15 june but will let us know where closer to the time.
Club BBQ (Niel)
Neil said due to a low turn out, why not try a new venue?
Borders , Ben Lawers, Glencoe or Arran?
Discussion about BBQ location
Ben suggested to try a new location and see if the turnout is improved.
Neil asked about Graham T triangle comp.
Ben outlined discussion was still being had as to who will the comp be run under as many non LLSC pilots fly bishop. Further details when Graham gets back from holiday.
Prizegiving
Chairmans (Ollie)
Ben awarded Ollie with the chairman's trophy for outstanding progression and achievements in Paragliding.
Ben recalled meeting Ollie as a new pilot only a few years previous and now Ollie is achieving 100k + flights and plans to fly the Himalayas!
Ollie thankfully accepted the award and said a few words about exciting plans ahead studying google earth with Dr Matt Wilkes looking for possible bivvy spots and flying routes! RAD!
