Hope to see you this Sunday at volunteer day! Pass the word on or
bring a friend.

If you are interested in getting involved, now is the
time! We will have another volunteer day soon on Sunday June 14th and
are looking for help with things such as grant writing, material
acquisition, deconstruction, administrative coordination and in the
near future, construction. Volunteer Day will be at the Last Organic
Outpost’s Emile Street Farm from 11am to 1pm.

Dan Phillips will come and speak afterwards and give a demonstration
on
Parquet flooring. At 2pm there will be a dinner and potluck. For
directions go to

The City of Houston’s Building Materials Reuse Warehouse located at
9003 N. Main in Northeast Houston will be holding a formal opening
ceremony at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 23rd. The Reuse Warehouse
accepts donated building materials from builders, contractors,
remodelers and the general public and makes the materials freely
available for use by any non-profit organization.

A recent study by the Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) noted
that approximately 38% of the waste stream in the Houston area is
construction and demolition material, much of which could be
diverted. The mission of the Reuse Warehouse is to provide an
alternative to throwing these reusable building materials in the
trash. While the formal opening ceremony is scheduled for the 23rd,
the Reuse Warehouse is already open to accept donations, Tuesday-
Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Donations are limited to items that are suitable for reuse. Examples
include odd lots of leftover inventory such as rolls of flooring
material, lumber scraps from construction, or items such as cabinetry
or plumbing fixtures from a home remodel.

In addition to helping divert valuable materials from the landfills,
donors receive a donation receipt and the weight of the donated
materials can also be provided upon request should the donor need it
for the donor’s own waste diversion reporting. Donors have already
diverted 33,474 pounds of building materials to the Reuse Warehouse.

The Reuse Warehouse is partially funded by an H-GAC Solid Waste
Implementation grant, in partnership with the Living Paradigm. By
donating materials, you can help organizations like Living Paradigm,
www.livingparadigm.org , an affordable salvaged materials housing
program, to build their first home in Houston.

Living Paradigm has a mission to empower people with a disadvantage to
participate in the American dream by creating home ownership of
shelters erected from salvaged, found, and donated materials. These
dwellings will be environmentally responsible and healthy places for
those that inhabit them and will contribute to the culture, spirit,
and individuality of the community.

The organization is currently gathering materials like dimensional
lumber, plywood, metal roof panels, corrugated metal, tile, pecan or
oak tree limbs and any other useable building materials. The 2 story
850 square foot residence and studio will be built just north of
downtown by the Owner, a local artist. This project will serve as a
demonstration in the Houston area that affordable owner-built homes
can be permitted and made from salvaged materials, marking the
beginning of a new homesteading initiative. Ground breaking for the
home is expected in early July. For more information on Living
