What is happening to the United States that I used to know, where I was born, where my family ancestors were part of those that first settled this land.

There was a time when our borders were open.
There was a time when we held our arms open.
There was a time when we had trust and our word was our bond.
There was a time when honor, respect and integrity were the norm.
There was a time when you could write an I.O.U. at the corner market or if you couldn't make a payment.
There was a time when we all believed that we could reach the American Dream.
There was a time when we would all help each other out.
There was a time when we would all work together - united we stand.
There was a time when what we had was what everyone else wanted.
There was a time when we were free and carefree, but we all worked hard.
There was a time when we were unfraid.
There was a time when we were strong, but kind.
There was a time when our government actually was "we the people"

What happened to this time?  How did we get so lost?

Now, as I cross the border, leaving my beloved country behind, tears fill my heart as I see where we are today.  Now, as I cross the border and the US immigration officers interogate a young girl with naturalization papers as to why she is leaving, and then proceed to ask for my US passport and my reason.  Now as I watch the people coming to the American Dream, who do not know yet that it is not the same, those who are being searched, checked, treated with disrespect and even harassed as they are entering.  Now, as I hear about people being arrested for exercising their first amendment which doesn't really exist anymore.  Now, as I hear about the accusations of who was a fault for the murders in Tucson, instead of focusing on caring for the families who were left behind.  Now, as I see the depression in the faces walking the streets.  Now, as the American born are exiting the country more than ever before, searching for what has been lost in a new place, with a new border and a new language.  Now, as our money has no real value.  Now, as we have lost our purpose individually and as a country.

Is there hope?
Why have we forgotten that the United States is one of the most abundant countries in the world, with everything right at our fingertips.
Why have we forgotten that the United States has breath taking natural beauty.
Why have we forgotten how we blessed we are with our magnificent and multiple sources of natural crystal clean water.
Why have we forgotten that we have some of the largest protected areas in the world, preserving natural resources for generations to come.
Why have we forgotten that we have so many gifts to share, like 282,766 schools offering world class education so you can expand your opportunities, open and innovative thinkers who developed 225,000 inventions just last year, 888 species of birds, 200,000 species of plant life, 284,800,000 people live here in basic harmony from every race, ethnicity and religion there is on the planet - the largest diversity of people, plants and animals on the planet.
Why have we forgotten that we are the leaders, as so many look to us as their mentors.
Why can we no longer see the multitude of stores, like warehouses, filled, stacked even, with things to please us, and flavors to try.
Why do we not appreciate our work, our opportunity to be of service, to learn and expand - whether it is paid or not.
Why do we not appreciate each other...
And Why have we forgotten that even if we have less now, we still have more than anyone else.
For we have all these things still and more today.  Perhaps our hope lies in changing our point of view by remembering and focusing on what makes this country great (and then forcing our government to do the same).

i took the time to read your heartfelt words. thank you for marking the noted journey of the american people...and in fact we are on our way to something great, more great than we can remember. As we watch these different systems close, fear rise, and the American Dream dissolve, we are closer to something much more real. This is the process, the sign that all things we have created that do not work are collapsing, to make room for the things that do. Together, by holding our attention on what we want, we are in fact creating our future, our dreams of a perfect world, filled with Peace, Love and Desire to continue to expand.
namaste,

hi Dawna,

yes, i am thankful for that.   there is beauty in this transformation process and i am pointing out that we can choose to look for the beauty, which "where attention goes, energy flows".
