Hi guys,

I'm looking to find out if anyone has encountered any issues, after designing a fully interactive form, with intermittent people not being able to open the pdf.  I have an issue where I am able to open it and not having any issues.  Other people as well are able to open it up in Acrobat Pro and/or Reader without issue and use it effectively.  However, there seem to be many other people who are not able to open it at all and are getting an error message instead.  This seems to even be after uninstalling the previous version of Reader and re-installing a new one.

This is the first time I'm seeing this kind of thing and have no idea where to troubleshoot being it's working just fine for me.

If anyone has encountered this kind of thing, can you please share along with anything you may have done to troubleshoot and fix the issue?

Thanks in advance and have a great day!

I almost forgot to include that the pdf in question was created using Designer 6.1

Hi Brian - Do you have the error that they see when opening the PDF ? Also, is this PDF reader enabled ?

Thanks,
Abhishek

Can you send it out to the group? Maybe make it anonymous. I'm sure between the lot of us will be able to figure it out.

Hi Brian,

In my experience, this usually only happens when a user attempts to open an xfa pdf in the browser. Do you know if this could be the case here?

PDF in the browser is dead - the Reader plugin only works with IE. You probably know this but I’m stating it here for others who may not know.

Post the error message if you can.

Hey Brian, hope this issue is on the path to be resolved.
In my experience, this usually comes up when the user is trying to open in a browser (most of the time un-knowingly) - just like Fred has said.
Or perhaps when opening on a tablet like Apple iPad which usually opens in Safari, or a PDF reader app (like Acrobat Reader) that doesn't support LiveCycle based forms (XFA). So the user just gets an error from Safari or Acrobat on the iPad and can't go any further.
You'll want to know what device, and what program (including versions) the user is trying to open the forms in.
I did a big compatibility test on XFA and Acro Forms about 2 months ago, across many devices and apps. My results helped point out problem areas, but mainly user mis-understanding was the main cause, as they tend to click and hope it opens, when they should be saving to their device and opening in the correct application (like Acrobat reader, PDFMax, or other dedicated programs).
If your issue is specific to Acrobat Reader, I'd get some data about versions, OS versions and the device used to start figuring out where the issue might be.
There could be a javascript in there that's cause the issue, or the simple fact its an XFA form.

Thanks for all the input, guys.  Very much appreciated.  I'm going to look more into the browser and device (iPad and phone) issues.  I think that may very well be the problem here.

On another note, does anyone know anything about PDF 2.0 not supporting xfa technology?  Is anything being done about that?

@Abhishek - the pdf is Reader Enabled.  This should not affect opening the file however.  Also it does not require a password to open the pdf.

I'm having more testing done, but I believe it will likely be found that this is going to be a browser issue.  Thanks again for all the great responses, everyone!  I'll keep you all posted if this turns out to NOT be a browser thing.

Initial testing seems to indicate that the form is working on computers when downloaded first, but apparently still not working on smart phones, iPads and the like.  Is this something I may need to rethink and maybe design in HTML for those types of devices?  Thoughts?

Brian,

XFA PDFs are not supported on mobile devices, period. Look at this:

The "work-around" is to render your form template as HTML5.

@Fred

Thanks bro.  I thought this might be the case, but wasn’t entirely sure.  Looks as if we’ll have to create a new project for this one!

I don't see mention of Mac Preview.  Many Mac users have no idea that it the default so if you ask if they have adobe reader, they'll say yes but they're actually using Preview.
